Week 11 Car Crash simulation
Objective: To simulate car crash simulation using explicit dynamics module of ANSYS Workbench for the following values of chassis thickness.
- 0.2 mm
- 0.3 mm
- 0.4 mm
Procedure:
- Symmetry Regions:

- Contacts: Being a sudden dynamic non linear event, no contacts are defined.
- Body Interactions:
- Type: Frictionless
- Other Settings: Default
- Meshing:

- Boundary Conditions:

Analysis:
- Case 1:
- Total Deformation:

- Equivalent Stress:

- Total Deformation:
- Case 2:
- Total Deformation:

- Equivalent Stress:

- Total Deformation:
- Case 3:
- Total Deformation:

- Equivalent Stress:

- Total Deformation:
Result:
| Cases | Total Deformation (mm) | Equivalent Stress (MPa) | ||
| Maximum | Minimum | Maximum | Minimum | |
| Case 1 | 1188.6 | 0 | 20996 | 0 |
| Case 2 | 1181.7 | 0 | 20924 | 0 |
| Case 3 | 1175 | 0 | 20994 | 0 |
Conclusion: The total deformation (average and maximum) and equivalent stress (average) is minimum in case 3 whereas maximum equivalent stress is minimum in case 2. Therefore, it is safer to select 0.4 mm as thickness of chassis among 0.2 mm, 0.3 mm and 0.4 mm.
