Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge

Week 10: Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge

Aim: Simulating Bullet penetrating a Bucket for the given model in Ansys Workbench.

Case1: Aluminium NL as Bucket Material

Case2: Stainless Steel NL as Bucket Material

Case3: Titanium Alloy NL as Bucket Material

Procedure:

Intially the Explicit Dynamics system is loaded in workbench.

Engineering materials used for this model:

Case1:

Case2:

Case3:

Bullet Material for all cases:

The model imported to Geometry by RMB on geometry -> import -> Bullet_bucket.stp

  1. After importing model, the model is updated to model and the next model, setup and solution is done in mechanical modeler.

Case1:

Case2:

Case3:

Here, meshing, contacts, boundary condition setup, and solution output request are given for analysis.

Meshing:

Meshing is done to Bucket by sizing around the partition edge

Analysis Settings:

Same for both tests and end time is taken as 0.01s and energy error as 5

Boundary Conditions:

velocity is applied on Bullet: -139000mm/s

Fixed support applied on bottom of the bucket:

  1. Solution output request

After setting the boundary conditions, the soultion outputs as requested is included from

Only for Case 1:

solution -> insert -> Stress -> equivalent von mises

solution -> insert -> Deformation -> Total deformation

Solution -> Worksheet -> user defined temperature

Results:

The solving is taken place and can be checked from

The results are taken for Stress and deformation for both cases

Equivalent stress:

Case 1:Aluminium NL

Case 2: Stainless Steel NL

Case 3: Titanium Alloy

Total deformation:

Case 1: Aluminium NL

Case 2: Stainless Steel NL

Case 3: Titanium Alloy NL

Comparison of Equivalent stress and directional deformation for both cases:

Bucket Material Max Equivalent Stress, MPa max Total Deformation , mm
Aluminium NL 1409.9 750.2
Stainless Steel NL 3618.6 142.02
Titanium Alloy NL 5372.8 801.3

The very high values in deformation is due to splintering of bucket at high temperature due to impact of bullet.

Conclusion:

Simulation of bullet impact on the bucket on the given model is successfully simulated using ANSYS WORKBENCH.
