Project 1 - Impact of Ball on Wall
Project 1: Impact of Ball on Wall
Aim: Simulating ball impact on wall using Ansys Workbench explicit Dynamics.
Case1: Velocity of ball is 50m/s
Case2: Velocity of ball is 250m/s
Case3: Velocity of ball is 500m/s
Procedure:
Intially the Explicit Dynamics system is loaded in workbench.

Engineering materials used for this model:
Ball material:

Plate Material:

The model is created in Ansys Spaceclaim
Intially the rectangle of 100x100mm is created in a plane.
The using Pull the rectangle surface is extruded by 5mm
Then a sphere of diameter of 10mm is created and it is shifted to a corner of the plate created and moved by 20 in y, 50 in x and 50 in z axis directions
- After model is creeated, the model's setup and solution is done in mechanical modeler.

Here, meshing, contacts, boundary condition setup, and solution output request are given for analysis.
Meshing:
Meshing is done to plate by sizing

Analysis Settings:
For the three different velocities the end time is changed to optimize the computational time.
Case1: 50m/s velocity

Case 2: 250m/s velocity

Case 3: 500m/s velocity

Boundary Conditions:
Intial velocity on ball is applied with components

Plate four sides are fixed

Case1: Intial velocity is applied on Ball: -50000mm/s

Case2: Intial velocity is applied on Ball: -250000mm/s

Case3: Intial velocity is applied on Ball: -500000mm/s

- Solution output request
After setting the boundary conditions, the soultion outputs as requested is included from
Only for Case 1:
solution -> insert -> Stress -> equivalent von mises
solution -> insert -> Deformation -> Total deformation
Results:
The solving is taken place and can be checked from

The results are taken for Stress and deformation for both cases
Equivalent stress:
Case 1:velocity of 50m/s

Case 2: velocity of 250m/s

Case 3: velocity of 500m/s

Comparing the maximum stress, we can see for velocity of 50m/s only has some elements beyond the yield stress and for 250m/s none of the elements have reached ultimate strength of 500MPa.
Only the velocity of 500m/s has some elements failing and plate is not completely ruptured.
Total deformation:
Case 1: velocity of 50m/s

Case 2: velocity of 250m/s

Case 3: velocity of 500m/s

Conclusion:
Simulation of ball impact on the plate is successfully simulated using ANSYS WORKBENCH.
