Project 2 - Crush analysis of aluminium Tube

Project 2: Crush analysis of aluminium Tube

Aim: Simulating crushing of aluminum tube by rigid wall using Ansys Workbench explicit Dynamics.

Case1: Velocity of rigid wall is 30m/s

Case2: Velocity of rigid wall is 40m/s

Case3: Velocity of rigid wall is 50m/s

Case4: Velocity of rigid wall is 60m/s

Procedure:

Intially the Explicit Dynamics system is loaded in workbench.

Engineering materials used for this model:

Wall material:

Tube Material:

The model is created in Ansys Spaceclaim

Intially the circle of radius 100mm is created in a plane.

The using Pull the surface circumference is extruded by 200mm so that the tube is a shell

Then Rectangle of dimensions 100X100mm is created in a plane attached to one end of tube

The using Pull the surface circumference is extruded by 20mm.

  1. After model is creeated, the model's setup and solution is done in mechanical modeler.

The wall is made rigid with stiffness behaviour and thickness of 1mm is assigned to the tube

Here, meshing, boundary condition setup, and solution output request are given for analysis.

Meshing:

Meshing is done default

Analysis Settings:

For the three different velocities the end time is changed to optimize the computational time and energy error is changed to 5 as this is crushing simulation

Case1: 30m/s velocity

Case 2: 40m/s velocity

Case 3: 50m/s velocity

Case 4: 60m/s velocity

Boundary Conditions:

Intial velocity on Wall is applied with components

Edge of tube is fixed

  1. Solution output request

After setting the boundary conditions, the soultion outputs as requested is included from

Only for Case 1:

solution -> insert -> Stress -> equivalent von mises

solution -> insert -> Deformation -> Total deformation

Results:

The solving is taken place and can be checked from

The results are taken for Stress and deformation for both cases

Equivalent stress:

Case 1:velocity of 30m/s

Case 2: velocity of 40m/s

Case 3: velocity of 50m/s

Case 4: velocity of 60m/s

Comparing the maximum stress, we can see for the stress values are in te certain range.

Total deformation:

Case 1: velocity of 30m/s

Case 2: velocity of 40m/s

Case 3: velocity of 50m/s

Case 4: velocity of 60m/s

Comparing the maximum deformation, we can see it is same as it is depending on the end time and the velocity given.

Conclusion:

Simulating crushing of aluminum tube by rigid wall is successfully completed using Ansys Workbench explicit Dynamics.
