Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge
Aim: To perform a Explicit Dynamics analysis in ANSYS workbench of a bullet pentrating a bucket for three different materials of the bucket.
procedure:
OPen explicit dynamic module in ANSYS workbench and open engineering data to select the material for bullet and bucket
we will use three diffrenet material for bucket in three case
1. AL 1000-0 , the mechanical property of the material is given below'

2. Copper alloy NL , the mechanical property of the material is given below

3. magnesium alloy NL, the mechanical property is given as below

the material use for bullet in all cases is TANTALUM , the mechanical property of the TANTALUM is given beow

now we close the engineering data tab and import the geometry and open it using edit in Spaceclaim
we will split bucket face so that the penetration of bullet can be done on nodes

now close spaceclaim and update the model and open mechanical model,

Open geometry tab and rename the companent for better conveninet as shown below , assign bullet Stiffness behaviour as rigid & material and Tantalum

Assign the bucket with AL 1100-0 material and stiffness behaviour as flexible

for connection: we will delete all defualt connection as in explicit dynamic study bullet will penetrate on bucket with a given velocity
Body intraction will be frictionaless

for mesh , we will use mesh size and use edge and deloy a mesh with element size of 6 mm

The statics of element are given below
No of node : 3317
No of element : 9648
the element quality of the mesh is given below

for analysis setting
end time: 0.01 s and rest setting will be default

we deploy a fix support to bucket at the lower face of bucket as shown below figure

provide a velocity to bullet in negative z direction with magnitude of 1.39E+5 mm/s
Now list out the required output from simulation and run
Picture:
Total Deformation :

Eqivalent stress

Equivalent elastic strain

Temperature :

for other material we will use parametric study to get the output
Result:
| AL 100-O | Copper Alloy NL | Magnesium Alloy NL | ||
| Total Deformation | Maximum (mm) | 1390 | 1390 | 1390 |
| Equivalent stress | Maximum ( Mpa) | 173.14 | 1134.575035 | 1073.951249 |
| Equivalent Strain | Maximum | 2.89E-03 | 0.015045512 | 0.028291179 |
| Temperature | Maximum °C | 228.87 | 1625.787465 |
1678.422709 |

COnclision
from teh comparison tabke above , it can be identify that the maximum stress is seen on the material copper alloy NL , then followed by mahnesium alloy NL and least stress at AL-1100-O material bucket.
it is harder for the buller to penetrate through Copper Alloy NL and Magnesium Alloy NL compared to the AL1100-O
maximum deformation information in the above table, it can be seen that the value is same almost for every material
The maximum strain is seen for Magnesium Alloy NL which is justified with the deformation value. The strain gives information on how the material of bucket displaces when the bullet hit on the bucket
When bullet tries to penetrate into bucket or any object, the penetration purely depends on the bullet material, bucket material density and hardness. Both the density and hardness will resist penetration. Higher the density and hardness, lower will be the penetration.
