Challenge

Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge

Aim

1. To perform the simulation of bullet penetrating a bucket using ANSYS Workbench.

2. To evaluate the behaviour in three different non linear material cases of bucket.

Procedure

1. Geometry

The model shown in the above image has been used for analysis.

2. Material Data

The abov two materials have been used for bucket only and for bullet Tantalum has been used which has the following material properties:

3. Mesh Details

The edge sizing control of element size 6 mm has been given to two side edges of the bucket.

4. Bounday Condition

The bottommost face of the bucket has been fixed for all DOF's.

5. Analysis Settings

The above analysis settings has been used with energy error of 5 and end time of 0.01 s.

6. Load Details

As shown above, the bullet has been given 139000 mm/s veleocity in -X Direction.

7. Results

7.1 Al 1100-O

7.1.1 Equivalent Stress

7.1.2 Total Deformation

7.2 Al 7039

7.2.1 Equivalent Stress

7.2.2 Total Deformation

Conclusions

1. Simulation was succeessfully completed for the selected two cases.

2. It was observed that for the same end time time step value was not sufficient for Al 7039 case.

3. Equivalent stress is higher for Al 7039 because of higher Gruneisen Coefficient.

4. Although for the given time step value in case 2, bullet has not travelled as much as in Al 1000-O but it was just at the verge of crossing the entire bucket.
