Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

Stress concentration on a Plate

Objective:

To analysis the stress concentration on Plate with single hole-Case 1 and Plate with three holes-Case 2 by using Ansys software and conclude which case is best for Analysis point and Manufacturing point.

CASE 1:

Here Plate with Single hole has been taken for structural analysis and refer below for more details.

1.      Sketch of the part

Sketch of a plate has been done in Ansys spaceClaim and taken dimensions from challenges. Refer below for dimensions.

2.      Final Part used for Analysis.

Sketch of a plate has been pulled (Extruded) to 30mm and it has arrived the final product. Refer below.

3.      Properties of material.

Plate with single hole has been assigned with Structural steel material and the properties of the material are shown below.

4.      Mesh details.

Tetrahedrons mesh has been applied on the product. Element size of the Tetrahedrons mesh is 2 mm. Also refer below for mesh quality details.

5.      Fixed support & Load acting on part.

One side of the part has been fixed for stress concentration and Load of 500 N is applied on other side.

Fixed Support is applied at one end (A side) of the plate.

Load acting at opposite side (B side) of fixed support.

6.      Results

6.1  Von-mises stress

6.2  Deformation

CASE 2:

Here Plate with three holes has been taken for structural analysis and refer below for more details.

Plate with three holes has been assigned with Structural steel material and the properties of the material are shown below.

4.      Mesh details.

Tetrahedrons mesh has been applied on the product. Element size of the Tetrahedrons mesh is 2 mm. Also refer below for mesh quality details.

5.      Fixed support & Load acting on part.

One side of the part has been fixed for stress concentration. Load of 500 N is applied on other side.

Fixed Support is applied at one end (A side) of the plate.

Load acting at opposite side (B side) of fixed support.

6.      Results

6.1     Von-mises stress

6.2     Deformation

7.      Conclusion

By comparing the two parts with Von-mises stress, Case 1 has 0.604 MPa & Case 2 has 0.580 MPa and deformation value in Case 1 is 0.00027 & Case 2 is 0.00029.

Case 2 is the best part from Analysis point because it has less stress value when compared to Case 1. Differences in Stress value is 0.024 MPa.

Case 1 is best part from Manufacturing point because it has fewer machining operations (eliminates 2x Dia. 30mm) when compared to Case 2.
