Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

Details of Mesh

Mesh size: 2 mm

Type: Tetrahedron

Case 1:

Maximum deformation: 0.00027492 mm

Maximum Von Mises Stress: 0.60645 MPa

Minimum Von Mises Stress: 0.007785 MPa

Case 2:

Maximum deformation: 0.00029727 mm

Maximum Von Mises Stress: 0.5821 MPa

Minimum Von Mises Stress: 0.00052984 MPa

From the analysis standpoint of view, I would choose CASE 2 (Plate with three holes) rather than CASE 1 (Plate with a hole) based on the equivalent Von Mises stress. The additional two holes (30 mm dia) at either side of the centre hole (60 mm dia) has reduced the maximum von mises stress by 243.5 kPa. Also, it is worth noting that the minimum von mises stress has been considerably reduced from 0.007785 MPa (Case 1) to 0.00052984 MPa (Case 2) by drilling these 30 mm dia holes. Drilling the holes of 30 mm dia has reduced the residual stresses slightly.

From the manufacturing point of view, both designs could be adaptable based on the application. Which one to choose depends on the application of the part itself or if the residual stress needs to be minimized.
