Challenge

Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

OBJECTIVE:

1. To Compare the deformation and maximum stress developed on a structural steel model for Case 1 & 2.

2. To Compare & find optimum design based on an Analysis standpoint.

3. To Compare & find better designs based on a manufacturing standpoint.

TOOL USED: ANSYS Workbench 2019.

CASE DESCRIPTION:

CASE 1 -

1.1) BOUNDARY CONDITION:

1.2) STRESS PLOT:

1.3) DEFORMATION PLOT:

CASE 2 -

2.1) BOUNDARY CONDITION:

2.2) STRESS PLOT:

2.3) DEFORMATION PLOT:

RESULTS:

1) Comparision of the deformation and maximum stress developed on a structural steel model for Case 1 & 2.

Serial NO.  Deformation (Total) Stress (Von Mises)
Case 1 0.00029 mm 0.594 Mpa
Case 2 0.00027 mm 0.572 Mpa

2) Optimum design based on an Analysis standpoint:

Based on the analysis Case 2 is better than Case 1 as maximum stress values are lesser. If the criteria or requirement is less stress then we should go for Case 1.

Although the difference is not much.

Less stress value in Case 2 is due to the effect of removal of stress concentration point by adding extra hole facilitating less abrupt geometry change as in case 1.

3) Better design based on Manufacturing standpoint:

Case 1 is better than Case 2 from the manufacturing point of view because of its fewer features. It Will costs less than Case 2.

Maximum Stress values are almost the same, so Case 1 should be chosen for manufacturing.
