Week 1 Spur Gear Challenge
Objective 1:
- Case 1: Using Cast Iron(ductile) as a material, to carry out a static structural analysis to find out Equivalent stress, Total deformation, and stress intensity.
- Case 2: Using Cast Steel as material, perform the same analysis for the results as in Case 1.
- Case 3: sing Cast Bronze as material, perform the same analysis for the results as in Case 1.
Objective 2: To compare the results of the three cases and conclude & give material recommendations.
TOOL USED: ANSYS Workbench 2019.
CASE DESCRIPTION:
BOUNDARY CONDITION:

CASE 1: Material used: Cast Iron(ductile)
1.1) EQUIVALENT STRESS:

1.2) TOTAL DEFORMATION:

1.3) STRESS INTENSITY:

CASE 2: Material used: Cast Steel
2.1) EQUIVALENT STRESS:

2.2) TOTAL DEFORMATION:

2.3) STRESS INTENSITY:

CASE 3: Material used: Cast Bronze
3.1) EQUIVALENT STRESS:

3.2) TOTAL DEFORMATION:

3.3) STRESS INTENSITY:

RESULTS:
Objective 1:
| SR NO. | EQ. STRESS (in Mpa) | TOTAL DEFORMATION (in mm) | STRESS INTENSITY (in Mpa) |
| CASE 1 | 469.34 | 30 | 529.1 |
| CASE 2 | 464 | 30 | 521.48 |
| CASE 3 | 444.54 | 30 | 495.68 |
Objective 2:
| SR NO. | EQ. STRESS (in Mpa) | TOTAL DEFORMATION (in mm) | STRESS INTENSITY (in Mpa) | YEILD STRENGTH (in Mpa) | FOS |
| CASE 1 | 469.34 | 30 | 529.1 | 344 | 0.73 |
| CASE 2 | 464 | 30 | 521.48 | 349 | 0.75 |
| CASE 3 | 444.54 | 30 | 495.68 | 144 | 0.32 |
Based on Stress criteria, Cast steel is recommended although FOS is less than 1 but highest among given material, which is further improved by design modifications.
