Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole
Stress Concentration due to hole

Introduction:
The stress concentration occur due to the hole. In this case, the stress concentration of the two cases is analyzed. After performing analysis of the two cases, we can conclude which one of the cases is best from the analysis point of view and manufacturing point of view. For this purpose, we will be performing the static structural analysis over the model. From there we will compare the stress value and deformation occurred in the design.
Model setup:

The fixed support is created on one end of the model while applying 500N force on the other end of the model.
Analysis:
Deformation:

From above deformation analysis model of the component, we are seeing that the deformation of the model with single hole is less whereas the deformation of the model with three hole is larger comparatively. The deformation value is higher where the force is applied and is less near the fixed support of the model.
Equivalent stress:

The stress value is higher at top and bottom side of the hole whereas the stress value is less on the left and right side of the hole due to higher surface area. The deformation of the hole is also higher at the top and bottom side of the model due to higher stress value at such regions.
| Max. Equivalent Stress | |
| case 1 | 0.604 Mpa |
| case 2 | 0.57 Mpa |
Learning outcomes:
- Difference in stress and deformation value due to different number of hole
Conclusions:
As the stress concentration value is higher in case 1 and deformation is less compare to the case 2. We can imply that increased number of hole has decreased the stress concentration in the model.
From manufacturing standpoint, i will be selecting case 2 plate because the stress concentration over the plate is not high compared to the case 1 plate which signifies that it is safe for manufacturing. And, increased number of holes do also reduce the cost of product so it is acceptable from analysis point of view too.
