Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole
Solution :
1. Design Plate:
- Open Ansys Workbench. Select Static Structural, new box will open name it as Plate with 1 Hole.
- Change the material to required one by right click>Edit>Engineering Data. Generally Structural Steel will be shown.
- To insert more material go to Engineering Data sources from upper tab> General Materials > Click on yellow + sign beside desired material from the list. Then close Engineering data tab.
- Go to Geometry>Right Click>Edit Geometry using Space Claim. Here you need to make a sketch of Rectangle as per dimensions needed with hole. Then use pull command as per the thickness of the plate.
- After that go to model>Right Click> Edit.
- Here specify each criteria as per requirement of the analysis. Then press solve button.
- Result will be shown. On result tab Rightclick>Insert>Stress>Vonmises Stress.
- Again On result tab Rightclick>Insert>Deformation>Total.
- So we get the required results after that make the scale to true:1
- For the second plate follow the same procedure.
- To save time open previous model and do save as with different name, then edit on the model.
2. Result Comparision:

- In the above images the Von-Mises Stress Developed and Total Deformation occured in both the models are shown after applying Tensile Force of 500 N from one end when other end is fixed.
- Case 1: In Plate with single hole in center the stress is developed at the circumference of 0.6 MPa of hole slightly perpendicular of direction of application of load. Where as the deformation of plate at the end of load applied is 27e-4.
- Case 2 : In Plate with 3 Holes the stress is developed at the circurference of central hole of 0.58 MPa slightly perpendicular of direction of application load. Where as the deformation of plate at the end of load applied is 29e-4.
- Conclusion : By introducing two extra holes as per dimension provided we are able to reduce the stress developed in plate but the elongation deformation is more in plate in case 2.
3. Selection of Plate (Analysis Standpoint):
- From analysis point of view the plate in Case 2 is more suitable as it reduces the stresses in the plate by distributing the load with other two holes.
4. Selection of Plate (Manufacturing Standpoint):
- From manufacturing point of view the plate in Case 1 is more suitable as it reduces the machining work as well as there is not much difference of deformation and stressed area with case 2. Less machining work means less machining times and lesser costing.
