Week 1 Spur Gear Challenge
spur gear challenge
OBJECTIVE: To conduct static structural analysis on the given spur gear model to find equivalent stress , total deformation and stress intensity.
CASE 1: In the first ductile cast iron is the material of the gears and 10Nm moment is given as input to the driver.
properties of the material:

EQUIVALENT STRESS ANALYSIS:

TOTAL DEFORMATION:

EQUIVALENT ELASTIC STRAIN:

CASE 2: In the second case cast bronze is the material of the gears and 10Nm moment is given as input to the driver.
properties of the material:

EQUIVALENT STRESS:

TOTAL DEFORMATION:

EQUIVALENT ELASTIC STRAIN:

CASE 3: In the third case cast steel is the material of the gears and 10Nm moment is given as input to the driver.
properties of the material:

EQUIVALENT STRESS:

TOTAL DEFORMATION:

EQUIVALENT ELASTIC STRAIN:

RESULTS:
| MATERIAL | MAX. STRESS/MIN STRESS(Mpa) | TOTAL DEFORMATION(MAX/MIN)(mm) | ELASTIC STRAIN |
| CAST IRON(DUCTILE) | 1379.5 / 0.017005 | 30.056/17.883 | 0.01259 |
| CAST BRONZE | 1393.1 / 0.020675 | 30.089 / 18.342 | 0.017485 |
| CAST STEEL | 1383.2 / 0.012989 | 30.026 / 18.438 | 0.0068344 |
CONCLUSION:
FROM THE ABOVE RESULTS WE CAN OBSERVE THAT THE EQUIVALENT STRESS IS ALMOST SAME FOR ALL THE MATERIALS AND SO IS THE TOTAL DEFORMATION BUT THE TOTAL ELASTIC STRAIN FOR CAST STEEL IS OBSERVED TO BE ALMOST 10 TIMES SMALLER THAN OTHER MATERIALS WHICH IS DESIRABLE.
IN ALL THE CASES THE POSSIBLE POINT OF FAILURE IS OBSERVED TO BE THE MIDDLE PART OF THE BOTTOM TEETH OF THE DRIVEN GEAR.
THUS CAST STEEL IS THE MOST SUITABLE MATERIAL FOR THE SPUR GEAR AMONG THE GIVEN CHOICE OF MATERIALS.
