Week 1 Spur Gear Challenge
Aim-To determine the Best material for spur gear among cast steel, cast bronze and cast iron.
Objective- set the model for all three materials (cast steel, cast bronze and cast iron) and determine the equivalent stress, equivalent strain and total deformation ,the material which has less eqquivalent and deformation is chossen as the best material since fatigue life of tha material is more.
Procedure-
1. First we chosse static structural from Ansys GUI.
2. We add material from the enginnering data and poroperties of the material such as yield strength, youngs modulus, shaer modulus, yield ultimate strength and bulk modulus.

3.We import the geometryb to the space claim.
4. we rename the the model as right gear and the left gear and we add material to the respective gears. after adding tha meterial we make coonections bewteen the gears by selecting the tooths of the gears and we give the contact between geras as frictionless and in geometry modification we give adhust to touch. we have to provide joints to the respective gears i.e revoltary joint for the both gears.

Fig -Joint details applied to the left gear
5. We will mesh the gear of the elment size 2 mm and we have check the staticts so that it will not exceed the academics limits.
6.In anlysise setting we give number of steps as 6 meaning the rotation given to gers are divided in to six times (i,e 180 rotation is divided in to six rotation ) and we use intial time step as 0.1 sec and minimum time step as0.0005 sec and maximumu time interval as 0.5 sec .
7.We give joint load to the joints i,e rotation for one joint and moment for another joint becuse to calculate the equivalent strain and from that we calculate equivalent stress.we give moment of 10Nm.

Fig Apply moment as joint load to the left gear
8. And we solve for the equivalent stress ,equivalent strain and total deformation.

| MAterial | Equivalent stress (max and miN)in mpa | equivalent strain (max and miN)in mpa | Total Deformatiom in mm(max and min) | |
| Cast stell | 322.58(max) and 0.000256615(min) | 0.001604(max) and 1.834e- 9(min) | 30(max) ans 18.5(min) | |
| CAst Bronze | 320.87(max) and0.00010346(min) | 0.004506(max) and5.6742e-9(min) | 30(max) and 18.5 (min) | |
| CAst iron | 318.93(max) and 0.0002545(min) | 0.0035986(max) and 5.8741e-9(min) | 30(max) and 18,5 (min) |
Conclusion
From above table the euivqlent stress is less for acst iron and equivalent stress is more for cast stell hence in analysis point of view cast iron is better material becuse the yieldind take place slowly and fatigue life of the material is when compared to other two matrials.
