Week 1:- Introduction to BiW and Fixtures Challenge

QUE 1- What is BIW and define its parts?

Ans - Body in white refers to a stage in the automobile manufacturing in which a car bodys component have been joined together using one or more combination of different techniques: welding , riveting , clinching , bonding , laser brazing. BIW is termed before painting and before the motor, chasis sub-assemblies or trim( glass , door , lock/handles , seats etc) have been assembled in frame structures.

- BIW is the steel structural shell composed of general stell panels welded together.

- To achieve an efficient car design it is necessary to have BIW design with optimised mass.

- BIW connected all the components in the vehicles like powertrain , driveline.

- BIW encloses , prtects thr passengers & cargos. The BIW design need to be stiff to suport the mass & securely keep them all integrated. further it needs to resist & absorb energy during the event of vehicle crash.

-BIW design also needs to be light weight structure so that there can be possibility to reduce fuel consumption and increase performance.

- The structure is made from steel or aluminium panels (0.7 -2.0 mm thickness). The panels are stamped into shape and then spot is welded together.

- BIW constitute about 27% of car's weight.
