Week 1:- Introduction to BiW and Fixtures Challenge

Answer No.1:

The definition of BIW is Body of White. In this the welded sheet metal components are form the entrie vehicle structure including engine, interior, doors, chassis, hoods and exterior. The sheet metal parts are assembled by using welding process or joining process.

In BIW we have a different types of body parts like body sides, roof, hoods, fender, under body and closures. at the same in this side body have a inner body and outer body. Closures have a front door, deck lid and rear door. Under body have a front end, rear end and main floor and last one roof have inner roof and outer roof.

Answer No.2:

The nomenclature is choosing the names of body parts or metrial. Normally BIW have lot of parts so all parts have a unqie names. The automobile manufacturing industry is not only in one or two countries, it is around the world. So when we compare one BIW part name is different nmae in other country.

Answer No.3:

The fixture is a divice to hold and support the component or work piece. The fixtures are normally used to reduce the production time at the same time its easy to do production work.

We have different types of production fixtures. 1) Production fixture for mass production. 2) Drilling fixture. 3) Milling fixture. 4) Pre production operation fixture. 5) Checking fixture. 6) Welding fixture.

The basic fundamental rule of all the fixtures id 3-2-1 method

Answer No.4:

In manufacturing industry jig and fixture are the very importent and it reduce the machining time. Any free body have a 12 degeer of freedom. The basic principle of fixture design is 12 degrees of freedom or 6 translation degrees of freedom. The 12 degrees of the work piece need to be fixed then only we can achive zero degree of freedom for component or work piece.

The 6 translation degeers of freedom are like +X, -X, +Y, -Y and +Z, -Z

The 6 rotational degeers of freedom

Clockwise aroud X axis ( crot-x ) and Anticlockwise around X axis ( acrot-x )

Clockwise aroud Y axis ( crot-y ) and Anticlockwise around Y axis ( acrot-y )

Clockwise aroud Z axis ( crot-z ) and Anticlockwise around Z axis ( acrot-z )

Answer No.5:

We normally see the BIW stations in assembly area. because in assembly line the different types body parts and panels are assembled together. Tool is a kind of divice or fixture is consists lot of units together to hold body parts in manufacturing unit. In the asembly line we can find different types of zones like body zone, doors zone, hood zone and side body zone.

BIW assembly line have a different types of stations like,

Tools station ( Geo tool and Respot tool ) geo tool tolerance -0.15 and re spot tool tolerance -0.28

Grippers station ( Handling and pneumatic gripper )

Stands station ( Docking )

Miscellaneous station ( Curing and buffer stand )

Answer No.6

The basic terminologies are used in BIW is,

Mylars or Fingers: Mylars are hold the body part or panel while doing process. We have a two types of mylars i.e. clamping mylars and resting mylars. it is also known as top side mylars and bottom side mylars.

Principle locating point: The principle locating points is used to locate the part at the accurate location. Principle locating point are defined in the drawing also.

Shims: Shims are very small components, the thinkness of shims are like 0.1mm, 0.2mm, 0.5mm. While holding the panel with the help of mylars, the stackup tolerance will reflect.

Risers: Riser is a part. it is used for height in the assembly line. Risers are different types like, L tpye, T type and square tube.

Rough locator: The rough locators are used to be guide the operator to locate a car body or panel on the pins.

Blade: Mounted on the riser. other parts like amrs and cylinder.
