Introduction:
Generally, in outer environmental conditions and especially Indian road conditions a vehicles underbody might be exposed to various factors such as water, mud, gravel, dust, etc., which leads to the rusting in the underbody of the vehicle which in turn results in corrosion and damage to the underbody.
For this reason, the underbody of the car should be provided with some coatings to protect it from the various damaging factors and prevent rusting and corrosion.
Purpose:
Undercoating provides an additional layer of protection or insulation to the undercarriage of a vehicle. It covers most of the car's underside, including floorboards, pans, gas tanks, wheel wells, frame and suspension parts, mufflers, and exhaust pipes. Doing this, may in fact help extend a car's life and utility.
Underbody coating is usually a dense cladding often based on rubber, which is applied uniformly to the undercarriage of the automobile. It is normally sprayed or painted on when the car is just out of the dealership and is clean.
Types of Underbody Coatings:
- Rubberized Underbody Coating: This is generally thought of as the best underbody coating for a car. It preserves the underbody well, protecting it from scratches. Applying this to the undercarriage is not much of a hassle either.
- Wax Based Underbody Coating: This – more or less – ephemeral undercoating wears away in a few months’ time. It is a good option for fighting against moisture. It is also the most affordable option among all the other types.
- Asphalt Based Automotive Undercoating: Best suited for lorries, trucks and large vehicles this provides a greater degree of protection compared to rubber-based coatings. However, asphalt-based coatings contain little amounts of rubber for sound-insulation purposes. The process of applying this coating is a bit time-consuming though.
- Polyurethane Underbody Coating: This coating closes up splits and fractures on the underbody of the vehicle. It offers up good protection against corrosion and also bonds with the metal. Unlike in the case of asphalt-based coating, you can paint over the polyurethane coating.
Advantages of applying Underbody Coatings:
- Minimizes Sound: It minimizes the sound from underneath the car resulting a noiseless, smooth driving experience.
- Heat Insulation: It insulates the interior of the car from extreme temperatures from beneath the vehicle providing a comfortable cabin experience.
- Anti-chipping property: If any stone hits the coating it does not get chipped away hence protects the underbody from exposure to water.
- Fights Rust: It plays an important role in keeping corrosion at bay.
- Prolonged Car Life: Good undercoating not only defends the underbody from corrosion but also protects the engine and transmission as well, less rusting coupled with slower wear and tear can surely add years to the lifespan of a vehicle. There would be fewer dents, dings and scratches on the undercarriage.
Disadvantages of applying Underbody Coatings:
- Applying underbody coatings can be a little expensive for some people.
- Undercoating will work best on new vehicles that have not been exposed to road conditions. A used vehicle may already have residue on the bottom of the car or even have spots of rust and corrosion. Undercoating will not help you if corrosion already exists and the corrosion needs to be removed first before it can be applied.
