Underbody Coating

                                                      Concept of Underbody Coating

Basically, underbody coating is a type of defensive layer that’s applied to the undercarriage of vehicles.

  • It is usually a desnse cladding (often based on rubber) applied uniformally to the undercarriage of the automobile.
  • It is normally sprayed or painted on when the car is just out of the dealership and is clean.
  • In Indian road conditions, a car's underbody is most prone to corrosion. Underbody provides long term protection from corrosion to car's underbody.

                                                                   Purpose of Underbody Coating

The main purpose of underbody coating is to protect parts like internal body panels, frame rails and other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but are prone to corrosion.

                                                                      Types Of Underbody Coating

There are 4 types of underbody coating as illustrated below:-

1. Rubberized Underbody Coating

It is one of the best underbody cating for cars as it preseves the underbody well, protecting it from scratches. Also, it is very easy to apply.

2. Wax-based Underbody coating

This is a temporary undercaing will which last for few months. But, it has an added advantage that it puts a big fight against moisture. It is also one of the most affordable option out there.

3. Asphalt based automotive undercoating

This type of undercoating is best suited for lorries, trucks and large vehicles as it provides greater degree of protection compared to rubberized undercoating. However, it contains a little amount of rubber for sound insulation purposes. The process of applying this typw of undercoating is a bit time consuming.

4. Polyurathane underbody coating

This coating closes up splits and fractures on the underbody of the vehicle. It offers up good protection against corrosion and also bonds with the metal. Unlike in the case of asphalt-based coating, paint can be applied over the polyurathane coating.

                                                       Advantages of Underbody Coating

1. Protection against rust

It plays an important role in keeping corrosion at bay. It can be very useful for those who live nearby the sea, where it snows in the winter.

2. No more loud noises

Since, the undercoating is often made up of rubber, it absorbs some of the rackets. Therefore, very thick undercoating can soften the nosies that reach the cabin.

3. Prolongs the lifespan of car

Good Underbody coating not only defends the underbody from corrosion but also protects the engine and transmission as well. less rustling couped with sloower wear and tear can surely add years to the lifespan of the vehicle.

                                                      Disadvantages of Underbody Coating

Wax-based Rustproofing must be reapplied every year for the best results.
The only way for an undercoating to provide ongoing protection for your vehicle is to have the service repeated frequently. Most owners can have a new layer applied each year without worrying about their underbelly being compromised. In salty or destructive environments this is a must! Hence, it can be expensive.
