Underbody Coating
UNDERBODY COATING
In order to prevent the underbody of an automotive from rusting, a coating is given to the underbody of the automotive. This is called underbody coating. Underbody Coating offers a long term protection for underbody from corrosion and dust. The frame rails, internal body panels and other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but are prone to corrosion can also be protected with the help of underbody coating.
The Underbody Coating is a hardened coating given to the underbody of an automotive. Since the underbody is made of different materials, It is prone to undergo corrossion. The main advantages of Underbody Coting are:
- It is fast drying
- It can be painted i.e., after underbody coating a layer of paint can be aplied on it
- It is non toxic
- It is chip resistant
These are some images which can help to understand what it means by undercoating.

Types of Underbody coating
- Rubberized Undercoating
- Polyurethane Undercoating
- Wax or Paraffin-Based Undercoatings
- Asphalt-Based Undercoating
Rubberized Undercoating
- Rubberized Undercoating is easy to apply
- It offers sound-cushioning
- It offersprotection from dust, moisture, and dings or dents.
- It provides the simplest and best protective measures against rust and moisture.
Polyurethane Undercoating
- It is a little bit quicker and easier to apply
- Polyurethane undercoating comes in cans and it is easy to attatch to an application gun.
- It can be painted over
- This works by seeping into all cracks and seams, displacing salt and moisture and flow slowly around rusty areas to bond with and protect unoxidized metal.
- This type of undercoating generally requires a little more surface preparation work before applying the coating.
Wax or Paraffin-Based Undercoatings
- Paraffin-Based Undercoatings is the cheapest and quickest option available in market.
- It will wear off quicker than other types underbody coatings.
- These never truly harden.
- It is usually available in spray gun canisters.
Asphalt-Based Undercoating
- These types of undercoating is used in large trucks and heavy machinery.
- It provides extra durability against rocks, chips, and moisture.
- It needs more time to cure than the other three
- It is not paintable
PROS AND CONS
PROS
- Prevent rusting
- Prevents retention of water within the parts
- Reduce interior noise
Cons
- High cost
- Undercoating doesnot work if the corrosion already exists.
