Underbody Coating

Underbody Coating:

Underbody coating is just a layer of coating applied on the bottom of the car to protect it from harsh environments and it helps to prevent it from getting Rusted. Most of the Automative vehicle's body which is Body in White is made up of Metal and Steel which are more prone to Corrosion and Rust when they are constantly exposed to water and humid air.

Especially regions with Monsoon Climatic conditions, where the streets and roads are usually inundated by heavy floods and roads filled with water were having a high possibility of getting corrosion.

A vehicle's most vulnerable part is its underbody because it is mostly exposed to various foreign objects such as water, stone, mud and heat would cause severe damage to the part. Since the vehicle's underbody doesn't fall under our visibility, it should be taken immense care to protect it from several damages.

The main purpose of underbody coating is to increase the maximum lifespan of a vehicle and to reduce NVH (Noise Vibration Harness) levels.

Types of Underbody coating:

  • Rubberized Underbody Coating

This is the most generally used underbody Coating. This will keep your underbody safe from Corrosion and also protects it from scratches. This rubberized undercoating is also safe to use on wheel wells and quarter panels. This will give a soft rubbery finish that also protects from corrosion and rust and also insulate some noise since it contains rubber. If needed the coating can be painted over and it is also very easy to remove by using an undercoating removal spray.

  • Wax-based Underbody Coating

These coatings provide base protection in moderately humid climates. They are pretty cheaper, as it is worth it that they are an ephemeral coating which mostly wears away quickly and is to be reapplied once a year.

  • Asphalt Based Underbody Coating

These types of underbody coating would be used in larger trucks and machinery to provide additional durability against rocks, chips and moisture. This coating would contain a small amount of rubber for sound insulation purposes. These coatings need more cure time and the process of applying is a bit time-consuming. Also, these coatings cannot be painted, so it would be best if it is coated only in Undercarriages.

  • Polyurethane Underbody Coating

This type of coating provides good protection against corrosion and also bonds with the metal. They usually come in canisters ready to preload in an application gun. This type of sealant works by seeping into all cracks and seams, displacing salt and moisture and oozing around rusty areas to bond with and protect the unoxidized metal. It also sands very quickly, if you need to perform any bodywork. Also, the coating can be painted over if needed.

Types of Underbody Paint:

  • Resin-based

Polyurethanes and rubber coating provide long-term stone chip damage and corrosion protection as well as sound-deadening effects. These also have the benefit of being suitable for a wide range of substrates and they can be painted over. Can be spray-applied, high build, and is particularly good for areas of possible salt exposure.

  • Wax-based

It is an good anti-rust coating suitable for all substrates. The wax is applied soft and cures hard, either by brush or spray and can be layered thickly. It cannot be top-coated.

  • Bitumen-based

These underbody paint systems provide high protection against stone chip damage and corrosion. They also have sound-deadening properties. Suitable across many substrates, but they cannot be painted over.

Advantages of Underbody Coating:

  • Fights rust
  • Absorbs Noise
  • Increases Vehicle's life
  • It can be self-applied

Disadvantages of Underbody Coating:

  • It can't be helped if the corrosion was already there
  • Needs to be reapplied over a period of time for best(4-5 years)
  • Underbody Coating is not impervious to damage
  • It adds weight to the vehicle
