Underbody Coating

UNDERBODY COATING:

ITS IS THE PROCESS OF APPLYING A LAYER OF PROTECTION ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CARS TO PREVENT THE METAL PART COME IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH WATER AND OTHER ABRASSIVE MATERIAL WHICH CAN CAUSE RUSTNG.THE COATING COULD OF DIFFRENT CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND CAN HAVE DIFFRENT PRINCIPLE OF ADHESSION.

BUT THE QUESTION IS THAT , IS IT REALLY REQUIRED ??? ARE THE MANUFACTURER NOT TAKING CARE OF THESE THINGS??

SINCE INDIA IS VERY PRICE SENSITIVE MARKET COMPANIES TRIES TO CUT THE COST AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE ON THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE NOT VERY MUCH NOTICABLE BY THE CUSTOMER.BECOUSE THE COATING ARE UNDER-SIDE WHICH IS NOT VISIBLE IN NORMAL CONDITION AND ITS A VERY FAMOUS SAYING " JO DIKHTA HAI WAHI BIKTA HAI" SO COMPANIES FOCUS ON VISIBLE THINGS MORE.

BUT IS IT THAT THE COMPNIES COMPLETELY IGNORS THE UNDERBDY COATING .THE ANSWER IS NO .

COMPANIES DO PROVIDE UNDERCOATING IN CRUITICAL AREAS WHERE THEY ITS HIGHLY REQUIRED. WHICH CAN BE SEEN IN THE FOLLOWING FIGURE:

Do note that a car when Manufactured in Plant is made with

  • Galvanized Process on Cast Iron and Iron Alloys
  • Galvanization is basically using Advanced Zinc Coating on Car Metals. Zinc is what Anti Rust and these highly specialized coating prevent car under-body from Rusting

SINCE MOST OF THE IRON PARTS ARE GALVANISED THEY ARE LESS PRON TO RUSTING , BUT STILL TAKING ONE STEP AHEAD AND COATING IT AGAIN DOES NOT HAVE ANY HARM.

ISPITE ALL THE ABOVE IF THE CAR IS USED IN PLACES WHERE THERE ARE HIGHLY MOISTURE LIKE COASTAL AREAS MUMBAI,VIZAC ETC THERE WOULD BE MORE CHANCES OF RUSTING ALSO THE ROAD PATCHES HOLDS WATER WHICH IS VERY COMMON IN INDIA EVERYWHERE.

BELOWS IMAGE SHOWS THE CAR WITHOUT UNDERBOADY COATING AND AND WITH UNDERBODY COATING.

OTHERS BENEFITS OF COATING ARE:

1.PRIMERY OBJECTIVE : RUST PROHIBITER:

The primary objective of getting underbody coating done is preventing metal components that are exposed on the bottom side of the car to damage from corrosion. You can shut out the Adverse effects of corrosion on your car by simply applying a rubberised anti-rust coating all over the belly of your car.

2.REDUCE NOISE :whne we move our cars the unpaved crumbs, and pebbles hit the car from underneath or if it would be metal it would couse more noise but since coating are rubbery it absorbs all the unpleasant noises and vibrations and marginally improves the driving experience.

3. HEAT INSULATION:It insulates the interior of the car from extreme temperatures from beneath the vehicle providing a comfortable cabin experience.

4.AVOIDS CHEAPING DUE TO FLYING STONES :Running on the highway or while pacing through a city road, you will often encounter sharp gravel or any other unattended object hitting the belly of your car with high momentum. This scrapes and chips off the metal from down below. A thick layer of Underbody Coating definitely comes to aid and minimises the effects of such contacts on the body.

TYPES OF COATING AVAILABLE:

Rubberized Underbody Coating:

This is widely considered to be the best underbody coating for cars. It protects the underbody from scratches and keeps it properly. It’s also not difficult to apply this to the undercarriage. This can be done at the authorized service center or by the local repair shop at a reasonable price. Rubberized coating is ideal if you want to keep the road noise to a minimum and rust and corrosion away.

Polyurethane Underbody Coating

This covering seals breaks and fractures in the vehicle’s underbody. It provides strong corrosion resistance and also binds to the metal. Unlike an asphalt-based coating, the polyurethane coating may be painted over.

Wax Based Underbody Coating

This transitory undercoating will, on the whole, fade away after a few months. On the plus side, wax-based undercoating is resistant to dampness. It is also the most cost-effective alternative.

Asphalt Based Automotive Undercoating

Suitable for lorries, trucks, and other heavy vehicles. In comparison to rubber-based coatings, this gives a higher level of protection. Asphalt-based coatings, on the other hand, incorporate a small quantity of rubber for sound insulation. The application of this coating, however, takes some time.

THings to keep in mind:

  • It must be reapplied every 3 to 5 years for best results.
  • It adds weight to the vehicle.
  • A third-party undercoating service might void your vehicle’s warranty.
  • no benefits if applyied without cleaning and degreasing.
  • does not repair the already rusted parts, but stops further propagation.

STEPS TO APPLICATION:

  1. Lift up the vehicle, for proper access and visbility.
  2. Clean and degrease the underbody very well to avoid non-adhession problem.
  3. Dry it properly before application.
  4. Mask off the adjacent areas and parts with paper where not allowed to spray, such as exhausting pipe, brake system, engine, paint surface and etc.
  5. Shake the solution well before connecting the cane with spray gun.
  6. Spray at room temperature and from a distance of approx. 25 cm in an X motion to build up a continuous coat. Do not spray on parts of the brake, engine or exhaust system.
  7. Apply this product until the desired layer thickness is reached. If a thick layer is required, let layers dry in between.
  8. After each use, clean the spray by flushing with suitable solvent.
  9. In case the under-body coating is sprayed to unwanted areas, clean it before drying.

GENERAL COST OF APPLICATION:

1500 RS TO 300O RS.
