Underbody Coating
BIW Underbody Coating
Under body coating is nothing but the additional cladding provided to underbody of vehicle for its protection against various environmental conditions.
It’s nothing but application of some material over the underbody which has good anticorrosive properties, reduces outer noise to cabin.
As vehicles underbody is exposed to muddy areas, pothole, debris and stones, flooded roads which tends to corrosion of underbody materials.
Also, every time underbody is not visible to driver as like upperbody of vehicles, so its take more time to know that corrosion of body unless there is some breakdown or failure of vehicle, so its better to have underbody coating for vehicle.
It increases life of once vehicle.
There are different types of coating available for underbody coating as follows:
- Rubberized underbody coating
- Wax based underbody coating
- Asphalt based underbody coating
- Polyurethane underbody coating
- Rubberized Underbody Coating:
Rubberized underbody is best coating and widely used coating.
Its easy to apply on underbody.
It can be done through authorised dealer or local dealer at very reasonable price.
It keeps away rest and corrosion and also reduces noise to cabin.
It also protects against scratches and dents to underbody.

- Wax based underbody coating:
Wax based coating is good against dampness.
This coating is cost effective coating.
This coating has short life span on its application as its feds away after few months of application.
It’s very good coating against moisture at affordable price.

- Asphalt based underbody coating:
This coating gives good protection for underbody against rubberized coating.
It’s widely used for heavy vehicles like Lorries, Trucks etc.
It incorporates small quantity of rubber application on underbody of vehicle.
It gives good sound insulation.
Its takes more time for its application on underbody.

- Polyurethane underbody coating :
Polyurethane coating is good as it has good sealant property.
Its seals cracks and fractures present on underbody of vehicles.
Polyurethane has property of strong binding to metal.
It has good corrosive resistance.
It can be painted over to the under body.

Advantages of Underbody Coating:
There are many advantages of underbody coating, they are listed below
- It provides protection against rust and corrosion:
Underbody coating is very useful in coastal area, snow fall area, and also is useful in area where humidity is high.
Because of all these parameters underbody is exposed to rust and corrosion, applying underbody coating is very useful, as tend tends to give protection for underbody parts.
- It absorbs outer noise to cabin:
Application of underbody coating absorbs outer noise (road sound) to some extent because of rubber.
As road sound is reduced it feels good to frequent car users.
- Protection for components fitted underneath to carbody:
Car has some underneath components like silencer, small engine parts which has different functions. These parts are more tend to rust and corrosion because of environmental conditions.
So, avoid these anticorrosion coating is applied on that parts for their protection.
- It prevents car paint from chipping.
While driving cars on highways some debris or stones hits the underbody of cars which tends to denting and chipping of paint happened.
So, to avoid these underbody coating is very useful.
- It increases life span of your vehicle as it has protection against corrosion.
Disadvantages of Underbody Coating:
- It’s not useful if corrosion already happened:
If your car some underbody parts are corroded already then you apply coating on it, then protection layer is formed but it’s not useful for area where corrosion already happened because it continues.
- Its cost more for old vehicles for surface preparation of coating:
old used cars have debris present on underbody before applying coating surface need to be smooth for proper application of it and costs more.
- Improper application tend to harm for small assembly:
If coating is not applied properly then it may block some mechanical assembly present bellow underbody and may lead to serious damage.
- Reapplication of coating as its feds away:
Underbody coating feds away after few years, so you have to reapply it over the period time for better underbody protection.
