Underbody Coating

Underbody coating is the process of coating a thin layer of material in the undercarriage of the automobile. Underbody coating is usually a dense cladding (often based on rubber) applied uniformly to the undercarriage of the automobile. It is normally sprayed or painted on when the car is just out of the dealership and is clean. But even if you are getting the undercoating applied after a couple of years, it’s fine too. This is because it can prevent further damage to the undercarriage

Underbody coating provides long-term protection from corrosion to the car's underbody. It also protects parts like internal body panels, frame rails, and other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but are prone to corrosion.

You have a few options to select from while considering an undercoating for your vehicle. Obviously, if you are getting it done through an authorized dealer, then you would have no choice as they have their own preferences.

1. SPRAY

Spray is the most common method used by dealers. The spray consists of a tar-like substance that is applied to the undercarriage. It functions as a barrier to salt, moisture, and oxygen, which causes corrosion.

2. ELECTRICAL

Removing the electrical current capacity of items underneath the vehicles is another method for applying to undercoat. A weak electric current circulates through the material, reducing the chances of rusting.

3.DRIP AND OIL

If you want to do it yourself, then drip oil spray is the best option. This can be messy but incredibly effective at protecting the undercarriage. It covers every nook and corner of the chassis, forming a robust layer of protection.

Time is the factor where you have to show patience in this method. It takes a long time to dry. In some cases, it drips around 48 hours to a week.

4. DRIPLESS OIL SPRAY

Coming to the last option, the dripless oil spray. This waxy substance is applied to the body and undercarriage, forming a strong protective layer. It doesn’t take much time to dry; however, the layer can easily wear and tear than the other counter methods.

Types of underbody coating

  1. Rubberized Underbody Coating
  2. Wax Based Underbody Coating
  3. Asphalt Based Automotive Undercoating
  4. Polyurethane Underbody Coating
  1. Rubberized Underbody Coating

This is widely considered to be the best underbody coating for your car. It protects the underbody from scratches and keeps it properly. It’s also not difficult to apply this to the undercarriage. This can be done at the authorized service center or by the local repair shop at a reasonable price. Rubberized coating is ideal if you want to keep the road noise to a minimum and rust and corrosion away.

2 . Wax Based Underbody Coating

This transitory undercoating will, on the whole, fade away after a few months. On the plus side, wax-based undercoating is resistant to dampness. It is also the most cost-effective alternative.

3 . Asphalt Based Automotive Undercoating

Suitable for lorries, trucks, and other heavy vehicles. In comparison to rubber-based coatings, this gives a higher level of protection. Asphalt-based coatings, on the other hand, incorporate a small quantity of rubber for sound insulation. The application of this coating, however, takes some time.

4. Polyurethane Underbody Coating

This covering seals breaks and fractures in the vehicle’s underbody. It provides strong corrosion resistance and also binds to the metal. Unlike an asphalt-based coating, the polyurethane coating may be painted over.

PROS;

  • Protects Against Rust & Corrosion

The primary objective of getting underbody coating done is to prevent metal components that are exposed on the bottom side of the car from damage from corrosion. You can shut out the Adverse effects of corrosion on your car by simply applying a rubberized anti-rust coating all over the belly of your car.

  • Reduces NVH (Noise Vibrations Harshness) Levels

Our country is filled with roads having uneven patches and potholes and while we manoeumaneuverars through such sections, the unpaved crumbs, and pebbles hit the car from underneath or get stuck in the wheel wells. The underbody coating’s consistency is so thick that the layer it creates absorbs all the unpleasant noises and vibrations and marginally improves the driving experience.

  • Prevents Paint Chipping

Running on the highway or while pacing through a city road, you will often encounter sharp gravel or any other unattended object hitting the belly of your car with high momentum. This scrapes and chips off the metal from down below. A thick layer of Under body coating definitely comes to aid and minimizes the effects of such contacts on the body.

  • Protects Vital Components.

Underneath a car is somewhere a lot of indispensable parts of a car are left exposed like the Engine, silencer, etc. One simply can’t afford to let these parts go bad due to rusting and hence in order to save yourself from a hefty repair bill, a considerably less expensive Anti-Rust Coating is a must.

CONS;

  1. It won’t do anything about the corrosion which is already present(major damages).,
  2. It adds weight to the vehicle, results reduce in fuel economy(Research done that there is a reduction of the mileage of 1.6km for every 3 to 4 liters of fuel)

3 . Risk of damage during the application, an improper coat to the body may cause extra damage to the car.

4. Cost will be high for the aged vehicle, from the 6th year its starts rusting(the term may be varied depending upon the weather condition of that area).

5. High cost for applying
