Underbody Coating
OBJECTIVE
Body of a car is usually made up of different types of metals such as Iron, Aluminium, Copper, Steel , etc.. So corrosion of materials occurs in the form of rusting and other factors.
Car’s underbody is exposed to most wear and tear caused by damaged roads, muddy water, stones and other obstacles on the road. We often wont see the scratch/damage because its not in plain sight.
Underbody coating is necessary, because it gives proper care to maintain the service life of the vehicle
DEFINITION
Underbody coating is a dense coating applied uniformly to the undercarriage of the automobile. It is normally sprayed or painted to protect the vehicle chassis from external environment, to ensure the integrity and safety of the car
TYPES OF UNDERBODY COATING
- Rubberized Underbody coating
It is one of the best underbody coating for a car as it preserves the underbody well, protecting it from scratches.
- Wax Based Underbody coating
This type of coating does not lasts for a long time, but it puts up a tough fight against moisture.
- Asphalt based Automotive Undercoating
This type of underbody coating provides greater degree of protection than Rubber-based coatings.
- Polyurethane Underbody coating
This coating closes up the splits and fractures on the underbody of the vehicle. It bonds with the metal and gives good resistance to corrosion.
METHODS OF UNDERBODY COATING
- Electronic method
Small electronic devices are installed under the body of the automobile and these devices are capable of stopping the corroding effects of rust, using a weak electric current.
- Undercoating
Spraying a tar-based substance on the exposed parts of the vehicle’s underbody. This substance hardens, keeps out the moisture, salt and other substances and protect the underbody.
- Dripless oil spray
A wax-like substance applied to the entire body of the vehicle, providing breathe holes at specific distance will make it more effective. As this spray has high viscosity it does not covers all nooks and corners.
- Drip oil spray
Unlike dripless method, the watery nature of the spray covers all the areas of the vehicle. It takes more time to dry, but an effective method.
ADVANTAGES
- Fights Rust and resistant to corrosion
- Absorbs and reduces unwanted Noise to the interior
- Reinforcement for damaged areas
- Prolongs and extents the life of the vehicle
DISADVANTAGES
- It adds weight to the vehicle
- It does not heals or repairs the rusts/damages present already
- Reapplied for every 3-5 years for best results
- It is suitable for new cars
