Underbody Coating

Objective:-

Writing a  one-pager about Under-Body coating and its purpoe, its types in detail, and its pros and cons

What is Under-Body Coating:-

Underbody coating is usually a dense cladding (often based on rubber) applied uniformly to the undercarriage of the automobile. It is normally sprayed or painted on when the car is just out of the dealership and is clean. But even if you are getting the undercoating applied after a couple of years, it’s fine too. This is because it can prevent further damage to the undercarriage.

The main purpose of undercoating is to check rust especially in the body components like frame rails along with other exposed metal parts. Underbody coating can also reduce wear and tear.

--> The above figure clearly explains us about the actual usage of under body coating, it looks very good after the under body coating completes.

Why under Body Coating:-

  •   The main purpose of undercoating is to check rust especially in the body components like frame rails along with other exposed metal parts. Underbody coating can also reduce wear and tear.
  •   In indian road conditions, a cars underbody is most prone to corrosion.
  • Underbody coating provides long term production from corrosion to car's underbody.
  • It also protects parts like internal body panels, frame rails and other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but are prone to corrosion.
  • A car's underbody is exposed the most to muddy terrains, patholes, debris, stones, wet and even flooded roads that lead to corrosion of the underbody.

Purpose:-

  •  protection againist corrosion.
  • protection of car vital components like silencer, engine, numerous other wires and small engine components for different purposes in the car.
  • Reduces NVH(Noise Vibration Harshness) levels.
  • Car underbody coating prevents paint from chipping.
  • Covering all the welded joints.
Types of Vehicle Undercoating:-
  • Rubberized Undercoating. Rubberized undercoating is easy to apply, and generally offers the best protective coating for your car's undercarriage.
  • Asphalt-Based Undercoating.
  • Polyurethane Undercoating.
  • Wax or Paraffin-Based Undercoating.
  • 3M.
  • Penray.
  • Rust-Oleum.
  • Volume.

 01. Rubberized Under Coating:

Rubberized undercoating is easy to apply, and generally offers the best protective coating for your car’s undercarriage. It cushions surfaces against moisture, rust, dings, and dents. Rubberized undercoating is safe to use on quarter panels and wheel wells and dries with a soft rubbery finish.

02. Asphalt-Based Under Coating:

Asphalt-based undercoating offers a higher level of protection suitable for large trucks, recreational vehicles, and heavy machinery. It’s formulated with some bits of rubberized material to aid in noise reduction. It offers extra protection against chips and moisture but is not paintable and, therefore, only suitable for undercarriages.

03. Polyurethane Under Coatng:

Polyurethane coating is easy to apply and works by sealing up cracks and seams. The compound displaces salt and moisture and protects the unoxidized metal from rust. It’s often sold in canisters that are ready to preload into an application gun. It, however, requires some surface prep work before application, like degreasing, and applying an etching primer to the bare metal.

04. Wax or Paraffin-Based Under Coating:

Wax or paraffin-based undercoating sprays are the cheapest and quickest options available. However, their results don’t last long, and you may have to apply a fresh coat after only a few months. In addition, the wax isn’t very adhesive on a metal surface. Its main advantage is that it seeps quickly into cracks and seams, and offers moderate protective properties against moisture.

05. 3M Under coating:

3M is a multinational mining and manufacturing company that produces consumer products for the healthcare industry, energy industry, and automotive world. The company was founded in 1902 and is headquartered in Minnesota. Some of its top products are the Dynatron 544 Dyna-pro and the 3M 03584 Professional Grade Rubberized Undercoat.

06. Penray Under Coating:

Penray is a global manufacturer of chemical products for marine equipment and the automotive industry. The company has been in existence for over 60 years, and its products are engineered to keep your vehicle operating at its optimal performance level. One of its best-selling products is the Penray 4424 Rubberized Undercoat.

07. Rust-Oleum Under Coating:

Rust-Oleum is an Illinois-based manufacturer of protective coatings and paints for home and industrial use. Robert Fergusson founded the company in 1921, with the aim of manufacturing products that reduced corrosion on metal decks. The company has a number of brands under its umbrella, including NeverWet, NanoShield, American Accents, and Seal Krete, among others. The Rust-Oleum Rubberized Undercoat is one of its top-rated car undercoating products.

07. Volume Under Coating:

Vehicle undercoating products come in volumes from 16 ounces to about 5 gallons. Think of how much undercoat you will use in the current job, the size of your vehicle, and how much you will need to buy in the near future. A 16-ounce bottle is suitable for a small car, but an RV or a truck will need a 1-gallon jug to get the job done.

08. E-Coating:

E- Coating is mostly known as Electrocoating, is a type of wet paint finishing process meant to protect metals and steels from corroding. The types of metals can range from car parts, hardware, etc. Electrocoating is usually done by the vehicle manufacturer as it done on the bare body of the vehicle. As the name says electric current is used to apply the coating.

Pros:

  • It provides a layer of protection against corrosion.
  • it will extend the life of yours vehicle.
  • It can be applied to damaged areas.
  • It may help to reduce interior noise.

Cons:

  • It is less helpful if corrosion is already present.
  • It works best on new cars.
  • Most vehicle make if five years before corrosion begins to slow.
  • It adds weight to the vehicle.
  • An undercoating is not impervious to damage.

Advantages of Undercoating:-

1. Protects Against Rust & Corrosion:

It plays an important role in keeping corrosion at bay. Underbody coating can come in handy especially if you live near the sea, where there is too much humidity, and rusting is just one of those everyday things. You should also seriously consider undercoating if you reside in a place where it snows in winter. The primary objective of getting underbody coating done is preventing metal components that are exposed on the bottom side of the car to damage from corrosion. You can shut out the Adverse effects of corrosion on your car by simply applying a rubberised anti-rust coating all over the belly of your car.

2. Reduces NVH (Noise Vibrations Harshness) Levels:

Believe it or not, very thick undercoating can soften the noises that reach the cabin. Since the undercoating is often made up of rubber it absorbs some of the rackets. The occupants of the car could spare themselves of the road noises – at least up to a certain extend. It minimizes the sound from underneath the car resulting a noiseless, smooth driving experience.

3. Reinforcement:

If your car comes with stock underbody coating, using another coating on top of it, is not going to hurt. It will offer additional reinforcement, protecting the underbody from water, road debris, gravel and small pebbles. There would also be a lesser chance for the factory coat to flake away.

4. Prolong Car’s Life:

Good undercoating not only defends the underbody from corrosion but also protects the engine and transmission as well! Less rusting coupled with slower wear and tear can surely add years to the lifespan of your vehicle. There would be fewer dents, dings and scratches on the undercarriage for you to fret about.

 Disadvantages of Undercoating:-

1. Add Weight -

Although the layering of underbody coationg is in micrometers but underbody coating may add some minimal amount of weight to the vehicle's body.

2. Fail to Protect Existed Rust:

Undercoating will work best on new vehicles that have not been exposed to road conditions. A used vehicle may already have residue on the bottom of the car or even have spots of rust and corrosion. Undercoating will not help you if corrosion already exists and the corrosion needs to be removed first before it can be applied, which can be expensive.

3. High Cost:

Applyiing Underbody coating on a vehicle can be expensive.

4. Damage Risk:

There can be chances of risk of damage during application, that the coating should be applied carefully otherwise the coating can get into moving parts such as CV- joint in propeller shafts and can cause failure of the parts.

5. Re-application is required after Time:

The life span of the coating generaly about 3-5 years, to get the benefit need to reapply the coating after a time period.
