Underbody Coating
Aim:
To describe briefly about Underbody coating and its purpose, its types in detail, its pros and cons.
Under-Body Coating and its purpose:-
Underbody coating is used to protect the vehicle chasis from external environment,to ensure the integrity and safety of car.It is a sprayable coating, which protects under surface of the vehicle from corrosion.Underbody coating provides long term protection from corrosion to car's underbody. It also protects parts like internal body panels, frame rails and other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but are prone to corrosion. The underbody of the vehicle is always exposed to muddy water, stones, rugged roads and potholes. This makes it prone to wear and tear, which is often not in plain sight but could lead to serious issues. Therefore, underbody coating is required.

Types of Underbody coating are:-
- Rubberized underbody coating: This is generally thought of best underbody coating for vehicle. It peserves the underbody well, protecting it from scratches.Applying this to the undercarriage is not much of a hassle either.
- Wax-based under coating: An excellent antirust coating suitable for all substates. The wax is applied soft & cures hard, either by brush or spray, and can be layered thickly. It cannot be top coated.
- Aspholt-based undercoating: Its generally contains a little bit of rubberized material that sets up firmly and also help soften noise. This type of undercoating also needs more cure time than other and is not paintable, making it best to use only for undercarriges. For large trucks & heavy machinery,asphalt-base undercoating provides a bit of extra durability against rocks, chips and moisture.
- Polyurethane Underbody coating: This coating closes up splits & fractures on the under body of the vehicle. It offers up good protect against corrosion and also bonds with the metal. This type of vehicle undercoating in is a little bit quicker & easier to apply. Oftentimes, polyurethane undercoating will come in canister pre-load into an application gun, this type of sealant works by seeping into all cracks & seams, displacing salt & moisture and ozing around rusty areas to bond with and protect unoxidized metal.
Pros:-
- It minimized the sound from underneath the car resulting a noiseless, smooth driving experience.
- It insulates the interior of the car from extreme temperatures from beneath the vehicle providing a comfortable cabin experience.
- If any stone hits the coating it does not get dipped away hence protects the underbody from exposure to water.
Cons:-
- Applying under body coating will not have any effect to the already corroded part.
- Undercoating is costly.
- Since the corrosion itself starts after few year, underbody coating is not preferable to ower who change this car after a year.

Conclusion:-
Underbody coating is one of the hidden factors for prolonged life of the car.As it protects the car from dust, minor hit of small gravel, minor wear and tear and rust.It provides strength to the underbody. But the coating is not for lifetime,It removes or chipped out as time pass.In wet area, the coating damages faster as compared to dry area. So,Therefore, check up is required over 1-2 years.
