Introduction:

Intake Manifold is the part of an automobile engine that supplies the fuel/air mixture to the cylinders. The primary function of the intake manifold is to evenly distribute the combustion mixture to each intake port in the cylinder heads. Even distribution is important to optimize the efficiency and performance of the engine. It may also serve as a mount for the carburetor, throttle body, fuel injectors and other components of the engine.

The model provided is Intake Manifold of vehicle is as shown in fig.1. The given component is a solid component; hence it is modelled using 3D mesh by satisfying the given quality criteria.

Fig.1. Intake Manifold.

Geometry cleanup:

The given component is checked for geometrical errors using checks manager. The errors displayed is cleared using auto fix.

Fig.2. Intake Manifold after topo cleanup.

Meshing:

  • The quality criteria & mesh parameters values are entered.
  • The perimeter length value assigned is 5 mm.
  • Using spot mesh option, the surface of the component is meshed using tria elements.
  • Ortho trias are used for curved surface and normal trias are used for flat surface.
  • The quality criteria are achieved by using tools like reconstruct, smooth and split options.
  • Under volume mesh module, volume of the given component is defined using tool volumes>> Define>> manual option.
  • The list option in the volumes is used to perform tetra mesh on the defined volumes choosing either the tetra rapid or tetra FEM method is as shown in fig.3.
  • The tet collapse issue is cleared by using tool fix quality under improve option.
  • The meshed model of given component is as shown in the following figures.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learnt the usage of various tools of ANSA software.
  • Able to fix the geometrical errors for given model.
  • Learnt to mesh solid components using tetra mesh.
  • Able to mesh the given model by satisfying the quality criteria.

Conclusion:

  • The given model is imported to the ANSA software and the geometrical errors are fixed.
  • The surface of the component is meshed with the combination of ortho tria and normal tria elements.
  • The volume of the component is defined and meshed using tetra FEM elements.
  • The quality is achieved as well as kinks and dips are eliminated.
