Steering Geometry 1

1. Calculate the following geometric parameters.

  • Caster.

  • Mechanical trail.

  • Kingpin inclination Angle.

  • Kingpin longitudinal offset.

  • Scrub radius

  • Kingpin lateral offset or spindle length

2. If the pneumatic trail is 25 mm and lateral force is 2000N, Calculate the restoring moment acting at the point where kingpin intersects the ground in side view.

3. Suggest a hardpoint recommendation to change sign of scrub radius that you calculated.

Q1. Calculate the following geometric parameters.

  • Caster.

  • Mechanical trail.

  • Kingpin inclination Angle.

  • Kingpin longitudinal offset.

  • Scrub radius

  • Kingpin lateral offset or spindle length

ANSWER:

  • Considering the co-ordinates, Front-View & Side-View were created.

  • Front-View

  • Side-View

Next, Finding the answers based on the above values:

- CASTER ANGLE: 5.376 degree

- MECHANICAL TRAIL: -9.41mm

- KINGPIN INCLINATION: 10 degree

- SCRUB RADIUS: -32.35mm

- LATERAL OFFSET: 85.3mm

- LONGITUDIONAL OFFSET: 18.8mm

Q2. If the pneumatic trail is 25 mm and lateral force is 2000N, Calculate the restoring moment acting at the point where kingpin intersects the ground in side view.

ANS. Restoring Force: 68.82 N-m

Q3. Suggest a hardpoint recommendation to change sign of scrub radius that you calculated.

ANS. Shift LCA Ball Joint towards WC simultaneously moving the UCA Ball Joint away from WC.
