Steering Geometry 1

Q1.

1. Caster = 5.37°

2. Mechanical trail = 9.4mm

3. Kingpin Inclination Angle = 10°

4. Scrub radius = 32.35mm

5. KP lateral offset or Spindle length = 52.13mm

Q2.

Restoring moment= Lateral force*(Pneumatic trail + Mechanical trail) = 2000(25+9.4)/1000 = 68.8Nm

Q3.

Current Scrub radius is positive as KPI axis is inboard to the wheel center.

In order to make KPI axis intersection with ground to be outboard wrt wheel center axis,

lets consider LCA ball joint co-ordinates to be (Y2, 100).

& KPI intersection with ground at ( -850,0)

As UCA ball joint co-ordinate is (-675,525)

Hence, Y2 = -816.

Thus, new LCA ball joint co-ordinates change to (40,-816,100)

Leads to change in Scrub radius sign to (-)ve.
