Static Analysis of a panel using Solidworks
Aim: To perform a static analysis on two models of plate with holes
Objective:
- To create a model of the plate for each case
- To perform a static analysis on two models of plates with holes
- To determine and generate plots for stress, strain and displacement and compare the findings
Theory

Finite element analysis
- Finite Element Analysis or FEA is the simulation of a physical phenomenon using a numerical mathematic technique referred to as the Finite Element Method, or FEM. This process is at the core of mechanical engineering, as well as a variety of other disciplines. It also is one of the key principles used in the development of simulation software. Engineers can use these FEM to reduce the number of physical prototypes and run virtual experiments to optimize their designs.
- Complex mathematics is required in order to understand the physical phenomena that occur all around us. These include things like fluid dynamics, wave propagation, and thermal analysis.
- Analyzing most of these phenomena can be done using partial differential equations, but in complex situations where multiple highly variable equations are needed, Finite Element Analysis is the leading mathematical technique.
Model geometry
Material used : AISI 1020
Case 1
- Length=300mm
- Height=120mm
- Thickness=30mm
- Circular Hole at the center:- Diameter=60mm
Case 2
- Length=300mm
- Height=120mm
- Thickness=30mm
- Circular Hole at the center: Diameter=60mm
- Two holes of 30 mm diameter which are placed 90mm away from the central hole on both sides
Fine mesh for each of the cases
Procedure
Case 1: Rectangular plate with 1 hole
- The plate is modelled accordingly
- Setup: A new Static study was created in Solidworks Simulation.
- Boundary conditions: AISI 1020 was applied as the material; one of the 120 mm X 30 mm face is fixed and a tensile load is applied on the opposite 120 mm X 30 mm face so that it stretches the plate.
- Mesh: An extremely fine mesh size is chosen and applied.
- Results: The mesh is applied and the simulation is run. The plots are generated and compared. The results are tabulated in the results section of the report
Case 2: Rectangular plate with 3 holes
- The plate is modelled accordingly
- Setup: A new Static study was created in Solidworks Simulation.
- Boundary conditions: AISI 1020 was applied as the material; one of the 120 mm X 30 mm face is fixed and a tensile load is applied on the opposite 120 mm X 30 mm face so that it stretches the plate.
- Mesh: An extremely fine mesh size is chosen and applied.
- Results: The mesh is applied and the simulation is run. The plots are generated and compared. The results are tabulated in the results section of the report

TABULATED RESULTS
| Sl.No | Properties | Plate with a single hole | Plate with three holes |
| 1. | Yield Strength (N/m^2) | 420000 | 420000 |
| 2. | Mass (Kg) | 7.86 | 7.53 |
| 3. | Max strain | 4.73 X 10^-6 | 4.61 X 10^-6 |
| 4. | Max displacement(mm) | 0.000550 | 0.000595 |
| 5. | Max Von mises stresses(N/m^2) | 1,207,596.875 | 1,164,861.875 |
Observations
- Increasing the number of holes, reduces the internal stress
- Displacement differs by an order of 0.000045 mm
- Strain experienced in both the cases differs by an order of 0.00000012.
Conclusion
Using the above steps, we were able to perform a static analysis on two models of plate with holes
