Sketch a G+1 residential plan according to Vaastu Shastra and Calculation of Loads as per IS code
AIM-To sketch a plan G+1 floor residential building according to Vaasthu Shasthra and listing down the names of the structural drawings required to be provided to the site for construction
INRODUCTION-
VASTHU SHASTRA-
Vasthu shasthra is the ancient Indian science of architecture and acts as a guideline to design the home in the way that enhance positive energy. Our nature is abundant with the power houses of energy sources like the sun, wind, moon, water, earth and fire. Effect of sunrays, flow of wind, pull of earth's magnetic field and other such cosmic energies. A good home needs to radiate the right kind of energy. A person dwelling in a house comes under the influence of a specific energy field. The architectural changes are not possible for a ready to move in house.
Significance of eight directions-
Four cardinal directions North, South, East, West. Four intercardinal direction North-East, North-West, South-East, South-West. Each direction signifies an aspect of life and is governed by various Gods.
North- Wealth
South- Dharma
West and East - Overall prosperity
Basic principles of Vasthu- Shasthra-
Shape- Rooms should be preferably be square or rectangle
Room basics- Room should be airy, well lit, bright and clean
Home centre- Centre of house should be an empty space
Stairs and Furniture-Heavy furniture in S-W direction
Water- Avoid keeping plants and water features in bedroom
Dining spacing- Should be near the kitchen and not near main door
Mirror placement- Mirror facing bed is strictly not allowed. Mirrors in bedroom need to placed in such a way that the bed cannot be seen
Kitchen- South-east is best. North-east to be avoided
Staircase- Southwest is best. Northeast to be avoided
Toilet- North-west is the best. North-east to be avoided
Master bedroom- Southwest is best
Guest room- North-west is best
Living room- Northwest is best
Over head tank- West is best
Underground water tank- North-east is best. South-west to be avoided
SKETCH OF GROUND FLOOR PLAN AND FIRST FLOOR PLAN

Dimensions of Ground Floor Plan-
- Entrance-2.00m x 1.50m
- Living Room-3.00m x 2.80m
- Lobby- 3.50m x 2.00m
- Kitchen- 3.00 x 4.00m
- Store- 1.80m x 1.20m
- Toilet- 1.80m x 1.80m
- Master bedroom- 3.50 m x 3.00m
- Toilet- 2.00m x 1.80m
Dimensions of First Floor Plan-
- Balcony-3.00m x 2.80m
- Lobby-4.80mx 2.00m
- Home theatre - 3.00 x 4.00m
- Toilet- 1.80m x 1.80m
- Master bedroom- 3.50 m x 3.00m
- Toilet- 2.00m x 1.80m
Other Dimensions-
- Thickness of external/ internal wall=0.23m
- Thickness of slab= 0.125m
- Dimension of column=0.30m x 0.30m
- Dimension of beam= 0.30m x 0.45 m
- Height of wall of ground floor= 4.00m
- Height of wall of first floor= 4.00m
CALCULATION OF LOADS
1) Calculation of dead loads-
a) Dead load of column
Dimension of column=0.30m x0.30m
Height of column= (slab thickness x 2 )+ height of wall for ground floor+ height of wall for first floor
=(0.125 x 2) + 4+4
=8.25 m
Total volume of one column= 0.30 x0.30x8.25
=0.743m3
Unit weight of RCC( as confirming from IS 875:PART 1) =25kN/m3
Dead load of one column= 0.743 x 25=18.575kN
b) Dead load of beam
Dimension of column=0.30m x0.45m
Total volume of beam per meter length=0.30x0.45x1
=0.135m3
Unit weight of RCC( as confirming from IS 875:PART 1) =25kN/m3
Dead load of beam per unit meter length= 25x 0.135=3.375kN
c) Dead load of slab
Slab is always designed for the span of 1m2. Hence assume size of slab as 1m x 1m
Thickness of slab= 0.125m
Unit weight of RCC( as confirming from IS 875:PART 1) =25kN/m3
Total volume of slab per square meter span= 1.00m x 1.00m x 0.125 m = 0.125m3
Dead load of slab per sqm span area= 0.125 x25= 3.125kN
d) Dead load of walls
Thickness of external/ internal wall=0.23m
Unit weight of masonry( as confirming from IS 875:PART 1) =20kN/m3
Height of ground floor wall=4.00m
Dead load of ground floor wall per unit meter length= volume of wall per meter length x unit weight of brick masonry= 4x0.23x1x20=18.40kN
Height of first floor wall=4.00m
Dead load of first floor wall per unit meter length= volume of wall per meter length x unit weight of brick masonry= 4x0.23x1x20=18.40kN
Total weight of both ground floor and first floor walls per unit meter length= 18.4+18.4=36.8kN
2) Calculation of live loads-
As per IS-875 part-2, for residential building, live load are taken as
- Living/Dining =2kN/m3
- Kitchen =2kN/m3
- Bedroom =2kN/m3
- Wasroom =2kN/m3
- Toilet =2kN/m3
- Store room =2kN/m3
- Terrace/balcony =3kN/m3
- Staircase =3kN/m3
2) Calculation of wind load-
If the height of the building is more than 10meters then building need to be designed for wind load
Bit, in this case the height of residential building is 8.25 meters. Thus wind load need not be considered
