Section Modulus calculation and optimization
AIM:
Section modulus calculation and optimization
OBJECTIVE:
Use section of the Hood and calculate the section modulus.
Vary the section in such a way that new section is an improved version of previous section.
THEORY:
Section modulus is to find the geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design.
Calculate the section modulus using the formula S=I/Y
S= Section modulus
I= Moment of Inertia
Y= Distance between neutral axis and the extreme end of the object
Section Modulus Calculation:
For studying the section modulus we need the cross section of hood.
Study 1:
1. Hood Design:

Moment of Inertia (MOI), Imax = 4.808047941 x 10^6 [mm^4]
Moment of Inertia (MOI), Imin = 1.402843414 x 10^4 [mm^4]
Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object, y = 878.6407 mm / 2 = 439.320 mm
Section Modulus, S = Moment of Inertia (MOI), I / Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the
object (y)
For Maximum (MOI),
S = (4.808047941 x 10^6 mm^4) / (439.320 mm)
Smax = 10.944295 x 10^3 mm^3
For Minimum (MOI),
S = (1.402843414 x 10^4 mm^4) / (439.320 mm)
Smin = 0.0319321545 x 10^3 mm^3
Study 2:
Decreased the distance between the outer panel and inner panel to 1mm. MOI as shown below

Moment of Inertia (MOI), Imax = 4.822224063 x 10^6 [mm^4]
Moment of Inertia (MOI), Imin = 1.406290856 x 10^4 [mm^4]
Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object, y = 878.6407 mm / 2 = 439.320 mm
Section Modulus, S = Moment of Inertia (MOI), I / Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the
object (y)
For Maximum (MOI),
S = (4.822224063 x 10^6 mm^4) / (439.320 mm)
Smax = 10.97656 x 10^3 mm^3
For Minimum (MOI),
S = (1.406290856 x 10^4 mm^4) / (439.320 mm)
Smin = 0.00320106 x 10^3 mm^3.
