Section Modulus calculation and optimization

                                               Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Aim

    To caluclate the section modulus for my previous hood desing and optimization of hood.

Section modulus

   Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross section used in the design of beams or flexural members.

    Other geometric properties used in design include area for tension and shear, radius of gyraion for compression, and moment of intertia and polar moment of interia for stiffness. any relationship between these propeties is highly depend on the shape in question. Equation of the section modulus of common shapes.

      These are two types of section modul the elastic section modulus and plastic section moduls.

Formula for section modulus,

       S=I/y

Here,

    S= Section modulus

    I=Moment of interia

    Y=distance from neutral axis to the extreme and unit mm

Section I

Section interia analysis for hood desing

Comment used for NX cad

Datum plane, Intersection curve , sketch , Input option for section intertia analysis

Moment of intertia (max) =4.8199*10^6

Moment of intertia (min) =1.3415*10^4

Y=876.5/2=438.25

S1=1.3415*10^4/ 438.25

    =30.61mm

Section II

Section interia analysis for hood desing

Comment used for NX cad

Datum plane, Intersection curve , sketch , Input option for section intertia analysis.

It is 0.5 mm offseted.

Moment of intertia (max) =4.8110*10^6

Moment of intertia (min) =1.3573*10^4

Y=876.5/2=438.25

S1=1.3573*10^4/ 438.25

    =30.97mm

Conclusion

So, Here difference between the momment of intertia for section modulus S1 and change the depth of 0.5 mm for S2.

The result is Section modulus I has better moment of intera than section modulus II.
