Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Hood design:

Hood design and outer panel shown below.

a datum plane taken from the middle of the outer plane.

using above command Intersection curve, select face will be both inner and outer panel will be selected. for set 2 the plane is selected and the intersection curve formed as shown below.

here, searched for section inertia command as shown below.

need to select the Existing selection as shown above.

CASE 1:

In case 1, hood intersection curve from previous project taken and edited the curves with externally and closed.

final output taken as shown above.

S = I/y

where,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

for the y value taken from the curve as shown below.

y = 881.2/2 = 440.6 mm

I = MOI (Min) = 1.436223373e+04[mm^4]

I = 14362.23373 [mm^4]

Section Modulus,

S = I/y = 14362.23373/440.6 = 32.59698 mm^3

CASE - II:

for case II, I have 0.5 mm below the line as shown below second figure to this case.

using, section inertia command we will get as below snap.

I = MOI (Min):1.454781564e+04[mm^4]

y = 881.2/2 = 440.6 mm

I = MOI (Min) = 1.454781564e+04[mm^4]

I = 14547.81564[mm^4]

Section Modulus,

S = I/y = 14547.81564/440.6 = 33.0181 mm^3

conclusion:

Case 1:

I = 14362.23373 [mm^4]

Section Modulus,

S = 32.59698 mm^3

Case 2:

I = 14547.81564[mm^4]

S = 33.0181 mm^3

from here we will get know that Increase in moment of inertia will increase strength for hood.

so, we can conclude that Increase in section modulus, moment of inertia also increases and also it will add more strength to the hood. Pedestrian safety will also increase because more space for outer panel will be able to dissipates the energy or stresses.
