Section Modulus calculation and optimization

SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION AND OPTIMIZATION using NX

Objective-To find the section modulus of the hood and optimisation to improve the overall section modulus using NX.

Introduction-

Section modules

Section modulus is the ratio of bending to the farthest fiber from neutral axis, or it is the measure of the strength of the beam.

Ratio of Area Moment of Inertia to the Distance from the Neutral Axis to the Point where the Bending Normal Stress is determined.

Section modulus (S) = I/Y

I = Moment of inertia of structure.

Y = Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.

Steps followed-

step1-The section modulus of hood is taken here,starting with creating sectional curve of the hood design.

step2-Once the section curve is created the section inertia analysis is done.

step3-Using the measure tool we take the extreme end points of the hood to find Y.

step4-Continue the same step witha change in the section curve creating an offset of 0.5mm.

step5-After the second section is created follow the same step and create another section giving variation on the embosses.

step6-calculation

Tools and commands used-

  • Section inertia analysis
  • Measure
  • Trim
  • Extend
  • Offset
  • Profile

Case1-

Maximum moment of inertia = 4.826750472e+06[mm^4]

Minimum moment of inertia = 1.472198104e+04[mm^4]

The total distance of the hood Y = 879.3377 mm

Distance between the neutral axis to the extreme end = (879.3377/2) = 439.668mm

To find section modulus of HOOD section-

S= 14721.98104mm^4/439.668mm

= 33.48431 mm^3

Case 2-

Maximum moment of inertia = 4.832428798e+06[mm^4]

Minimum moment of inertia = 1.494779577e+04[mm^4]

To find section modulus of new HOOD section-

S = 14947.79577mm^4/439.668mm

=33.9979161 mm^3

Hence there is positive improvement in section modulus comapred to section 1.

Case3-

Maximum moment of inertia = 4.886806088e+06[mm^4]

Minimum moment of inertia = 1.585841272e+04[mm^4]

To find section modulus of new HOOD section-

S = 15858.41272mm^4/439.668mm

= 36.0690628mm^3

Hence there is positive improvement in section modulus comapred to section 1 and 2.

Conclusion:

when comparing case 1 ,case 2 and case 3.

1. The section modulus value of case3>case2>case1

2. As we increase the section area, the moment of inertia & section modulus increases which means strength and load material also increase.
