Section Modulus calculation and optimization
In this challenge we calculate the section modulus ( moment of inertia) for a hood design in Nxcad
Now for this challenge we have the hood design assy. As a input data.
Basically here we are checking for front collision of the hood, like how the hood is deforming when an external force hit on it, for this we calculate the moment of inertia of the section of the hood, because moment of inertia is directly proportional to the bending moment.
Formula for bending moment - M = (I/Y)*ჾ, M - Bending Moment, I - Moment of Inertia, Y - Neutral Axis length, ჾ - Bending Stress
For moment inertia calculation we need a cross section of our hood, for that we create a datum plan in the center of the hood, after this take intersection curve to form cross section the hood
After this create a new sketch and then project this intersection curve in to our sketch so that we can form a closed body form this, for this we use studio spline to fill any gaps, after completing this we calculate the section inertia analysis, for this use the section inertia analysis command in analysis tab, in that we select the existing sketch & provide the thickness value of the sheet of 0.75 mm then we get our first moment of inertia.
We try to increase the moment of inertia value by modify the design, for that we create another sketch & project the previous one in to this then we offset the inner panel sketch by 0.5 mm & then again join all the curves, & then do the section inertia analysis for this new section.
Now we compare our inertia value then we clearly see that the moment of inertia is slightly increase form its previous value, hence we can clearly say that we have slightly increase the hood strength by modifying the design only.
