Section Modulus calculation and optimization
AIM :
To study and calculate the Section modulus of an Car Hood and Optimize it by changing the netural axis in a way to increase the resistance towards bending.
AGENDA :
1) SECTION MODULUS.
2) CALCULATION AND OPTIMIZATION.
3) CONCLUSION.
INTRODUCTION :
To increase the resisting factor of bending in an Developed car hood model by changing its neutral axis.
1) SECTION MODULUS :
Section Modulus is the important factor in the engineering development. Where it is directly interconnect with the stiffness and rigidity of the component. Section Modulus play's a main role in Optimization of the component strength without addition of any reinforcement, it leads to achieve a very good weight requirement. In automobile industry it is very crucial to reduce the Weight of an vehicle to provide a economic vehicle. Section Modulus is the geometric Cross section of the Component to ensure it's strength.

Section Modulus, S=I/Y
I is the moment of inertia,
Y is the distance from the centroidal axis of the component.
MOMENT OF INERTIA : Inertia in simple term, as the resistance of the object to change it's state of nature. MI can be used in the application of Bending analysis and the deformation analysis. Moment of inertia is classified as Area of moment of inertia and mass of moment of inertia.
AREA MOMENT OF INERTIA : It is the ability of an object to resist the deformation about its axis. It can be used in the deformation analysis of the static component e.g. Pillar's, Beam's.
MASS MOMENT OF INERTIA : It is the ability of an object to resist the rotational motion about its axis. It can be used in the app of Dynamic analysis of an rigid body.
Both the Elastic and Plastic modulus are come's under the area of moment of inertia application. In this the resistance of the strain can be optimized by changing its shape form the centre point.
ELASTIC MODULUS :
It is the measure of cross section area distribution to an centroidal axis of the component to reduce the strain of an object. And it is also used to find the maximum elastic limit of the structure.
PLASTIC MODULUS :
It is the measure of the cross section of the part to resist the plastic deformation. It is used to describe the structural strength of an object before it undergoes plastic deformation before its fail (brekage).
2) CALCULATION AND OPTIMIZATION :
Apart from elastic and plastic modulus it is a geometric property regardless of it material to define its strength at an cross section to increase it structural strength. In simple words section Modulus analysis can help to intensifying its strength by without adding any reinforecment into it .

SECTION MODULUS EQUATION FOR DIFFERENT SHAPES
STUDY 1 :
- Create a datum plane paralelt to the anlaysis can be done and make a section of it and use the studio spline to close the model.
- Use section inertia analysis command and make sure the Thickness of the model to be.

SECTION INERITA VALUE BEFORE OPTIMIZATION
MOI (MAX) = 9.069244776e+07(mm^4)
MOI (MIN) = 2.6511676307e+05(mm^4)
Section modulus , S = I/Y
Y is nothing but the dimension between the edges of the hood.
Y = 879.4/2 = 439.7
Therefore, S= 2.6516x 10^5 / 439.7
S= 6.0304x10^2 mm^3
STUDY 2:
- Change the inner panel dimension to an 0.5 mm to increase the section value.

MOI (MAX) = 9.052422990e+07 mm^4
MOI (MIN) = 2.684842529e+05 mm^4
Section Modulus S= 2.684842x10^5/ 439..7
S= 6.206076x10^2 mm^3
CONCLUSION :
Here we seen that the Hood Structural strength can be increased by increasing the depth of the Component.
