Section Modulus calculation and optimization

  • What is Section Modulus?

Section modulus is used for the design of beams or flexural members. It is a geometric property for a given cross-section, highly depending on a shape. There are the elastic section modulus and the plastic section modulus. In our study, the elastic section modulus will be considered.

The elastic section modulus is applied up to the yield point. It is defined as S=I/y, where I is the second moment of area (or area moment of inertia, not to be confused with moment of inertia). It also can be used to calculate the yield moment My=S∙σy, where σy is the yield strength of the material.

  • Hood Section Modulus

1) Gap = 5 mm (Original Design)

2) Gap = 4 mm

3) Gap = 6mm

  • Conclusion

As you can see from the below table, the bigger gap makes the section modulus smaller. Therefore, minimizing the gap from outer panel to inner panel will make the best result. However, this gap should provide the enough space for mastics. As a result, I chose the 4mm gap to optimize the hood design.
