Section Modulus calculation and optimization
AIM:
Section modulus calculation and optimization.
OBJECTIVE:
Use section of the Hood and calculate the section modulus.
Vary the section in such a way that the new section is an improved version of the previous section.
THEORY:
Section modulus is to find the geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design.
Calculate the section modulus using the formula S=I/Y
S= Section modulus
I= Moment of Inertia
Y= Distance between neutral axis and the extreme end of the object
Section Modulus Calculation:
For studying the section modulus we need the cross-section of the hood. For that, I created a cross-section using an intersection curve.

We can have the value of Y from the above picture, ie;
Y=242.028mm
Study-1:
Find the moment of inertia using a section.

M1= Minimum value
M2= Maximum value
Here the maximum moment of inertia, I = 698793[mm^4]
The distance between the neutral axis and extreme end of the object, Y=242.028mm
Therefore the Section Modulus,
S1 = I/Y
S1= 698793[mm^4] / 242.028 [mm]
S1= 2887.2403[mm^3]
STUDY 2:
When I increased the distance between the outer panel and inner panel by 0.5mm. I got the MOI as shown below:

Here the minimum moment of inertia, I = 735400m4[mm^4]
The distance between the neutral axis and extreme end of the object, Y=242.028mm
Therefore the Section Modulus,
S2 = I/Y
S2= 735400[mm^4] / 242.028 [mm]
S2= 3038.49141 [mm^3]
CONCLUSION:
In this study, we take the maximum inertia moment to analyze the maximum limit of hood deformation. Thus the section modulus of the
front hood was calculated and compared with the new design.
From the result, we found out that increasing the cross-section area would give a better section modulus and helps in increasing the strength of
the hood.
