Section Modulus calculation and optimization
AIM:
To calculate the section modulus for the previously designed hood and to come up with the new section by optimization and altering the design.
Theory:
Use the Section from your Hood design and calculate the section modulus using the formula S = I/y
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
Y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.
Create new section to improve the section modulus of previous section.
Section Modulus:
Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. Other geometric properties used in design include area for tension and shear, radius of gyration for compression, and moment of inertia and polar moment of inertia for stiffness. Any relationship between these properties is highly dependent on the shape in question. Equations for the section moduli of common shapes are given below. There are two types of section moduli, the elastic section modulus and the plastic section modulus.
For General design, the elastic section modulus is used to applying yield point for the most metals and the other common materials. The elastic section modulus is defined as S=I/Y, where I is the second moment of inertia or area moment of inertia.
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
Y = distance between
the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.
Calculation:
This section was directly taken from the hood model which was previously designed.
Section 1:

This section was directly taken from the hood model which was previously designed.
I = 5154772.530mm^4
Y = 450.26mm
S = I/Y = 10276.3829 mm^3
Section 2:
This has an improved moment of inertia.
Things that were done are
1. Extra embosses were added to this section

I = 5219170.325mm^4
Y = 450.26mm
S = I/Y = 11591.459 mm^3
The first section hood design has higher value and it will be more enough for that panel and hence according to the question received i optimized the panel hood to overcome the previous value.
Conclusion:
Calculated the section modulus for the previously designed hood and and the new section has been created by altering them and we got the higher value of section modulus hence the strength also increased. Hence, it can be concluded that the mechanical behaviour of section 2 proves to be better than section 1.
