Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Dear Team ,
SECTION MODULUS:
- section modulus is used to find the load withstanding capacity of the product.
- The larger the section modulus beam can with stand more load than lower one.
- It is very important property to consider when we design such load bearing application parts.
It can be calculated using formula
S= I/Y unit MM ^3
S- section modulus
I - moment of inertia
Y - distance between neutral axis and extreme point of surface.
Initial Analysis:
Taken the given Hood assembly and made the section out of it. and using section inertia analysis option found the inertia value.

Minimum Moment of inertia I= 1.568347 x10 ^4 (mm^4) = 15683.47 mm^4.
Distance betwen neutral axis and end of surface Y = 884.25/2 = 442.125 mm.
so, the Section modulus is S = I/Y
= 15683.47/442.125
= 35.47 mm^3.
AFTER OPTIMIZED:

I increased the depth of the inner pannel for 3 mm. after I done the section modulus analysis.
Minimum Moment of inertia I= 1.7791214 x10 ^4 (mm^4) = 17791.21 mm^4.
Distance betwen neutral axis and end of surface Y = 884.25/2 = 442.125 mm.
so, the Section modulus is S = I/Y
= 17791.21/442.125
= 40.24 mm^3.
CONCLUSION :
Thus I increased the strength of the hood by increasing the section modulus value of hood.
