Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS ANALYSIS AND OPTIMIZATION OF HOOD
SECTION MODULUS
Section modulus is the ratio of Area Moment of inertia and distance between neutral axis and extreme end of the object.
S = I/Y
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia (mm^4)
Y = Distance between Neutral axis and outermost fiber(mm)
SECTION MODULUS OF HOOD
- Create a datum plane on the hood surface
- Then using the intersection curve we create a closed section of the hood
- After that we will perform Section modulus analysis and we will get Ymax and Ymin

Moment of Inertia is the ressistance against the moment,bending.So higher the moment of inertia higher will be its ressistance to deform is also higher. So always keep high moment of inertia to keep up the strength.
Imax = 9.184*10^7 mm^4
Imin = 2.8*10^5 mm^4
Y = 876.84/2 = 438.42mm
S = I/Y
Section modulus for max = 9.184*10^7/438.42 = 2.09*10^5
Section modulus for min = 2.8*10^5/438.42 = 638.65
SECTION MODULUS OF HOOD AFTER OPTIMIZATION

Imax = 9.167*10^7 mm^4
Imin = 2.83*10^5 mm^4
Y = 438.42mm
S = I/Y
Section modulus for max = 9.167*10^7/438.42 = 2.09*10^5
Section modulus for min = 2.83*10^5/438.42 = 645.49
CONCLUSION
Strength of material is directly proportional to Moment of Inertia. The sectional modulus of hood is calculated and optimized design is also done to increase the section modulus of hood by incresing the sectional area.
