Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Section Modulus:
Section modulus (S) is defined as the ratio of the moment of inertia(I) of a section to the distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object(Y).
The formula for the section modulus is given as: S= I/Y
SECTION #1:
- For this calculation, I have taken my hood design as a reference.
- In regards to the values, find the hood's inertia using NX Cad's section inertia analysis tool.
- Moreover, gauge the hood's length.
- Then, the Section modulus is calculated by using given formula. i.e,
S= I/Y
Where,
S= Section modulus,
I(min.)=Moment of inertia(min.) = 2.752858041*10^5[mm^4]
Y= Distance from neutral axis to extreme end = (L/2) = 876.6146/2 = 438.3073
S = 2.75285*10^5 / 438.3073
S = 628.064 mm^3

In order to calculate the strength of the hood panel, I have optimized the hood section area by shifting the hood inner panel downward by 0.5 mm.
SECTION #2:
- For this calculation, I have taken my hood design as a reference.
- In regards to the values, find the hood's inertia using NX Cad's section inertia analysis tool.
- Moreover, gauge the hood's length.
- Then, the Section modulus is calculated by using given formula. i.e,
S= I/Y
Where,
S= Section modulus,
I(min.)=Moment of inertia(min.) = 2.820636129*10^5[mm^4]
Y= Distance from neutral axis to extreme end = (L/2) = 876.6146/2 = 438.3073
S = 2.82063*10^5 / 438.3073
S = 643.528 mm^3

Section #1:
S = 628.064 mm^3
Section #2:
S = 643.528 mm^3
- Section #2 has a higher section modulus value than Section #1.
- The moment of inertia and section modulus values rise as the section area is raised by 0.5 mm. This implies that material strength and load also rise.
