Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section Modulus

It is the ratio of area moment of inertia about the neutral axis and to the distance of outermost fiber from the neutral axis.

S = I/y

 Where,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

Taking section of hood design to calculate the section modulus,

calculation of area moment of inertia,

find the value of y

d = 876.5616/2

   = 438.2808

Calculation of section modulus

S = I/y

     = 294559.4981/438.2808

 S  = 672.079 mm^3

later we change a design and offsetted by 0.5 mm

and section modulus is

calculation of area moment of inertia

Caluculation section modulus

Z = I/y

   =298681.4027/438.2802

   =681.4841 mm^3
