Challenge

Section Modulus calculation and optimization

  1. Create a datum plane on the curve of the hood.

    2. Using the intersection curve select the face of the hood by selecting the single face and in set 2 select the datum              plane.

 The below image is the intersection curve which we get for the analysis

 3. create a sketch,

  • project the curve
  • fill the gaps using studio spline
  • finsh the sketch

4.Section inertia analysis

  •  select the curve
  • in setting > section type> hallow > hallow thickness = 0.75mm

  Now we are going to check the improved strength of the hood design by offseting the intersection curve of the inner panel.

  1.   Create a sketch
  2. project the curve
  3. offset the curve to 0.5mm
  4. fill the gap between the curve using the studio spline option
  5. make it a closed profile.
  6. finally section inertia analysis

  Now we are going to calculate the setcion modulus for both the design and compare wheather the strength has been improved or not.

   SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION

CASE 1

SECTION MODULUS (S) = I/Y

I = Moment of inertia

Y = distance from the neutral axis to the end of the curve

 The value of  (I) should be considered as minimum value of the MOI

due to distance from the neutral axis the value of Y should be half the original length

(Y) = 877.584/2 = 438.792mm

I = 2.8505 *10^3 mm^4

Case 1 , S= 2.8505 *10^3 mm^4 / 438.792 mm

               = 6.496 mm^3

Case 2

 S  = 2.9681 *10^3 mm^4 / 438.792 mm

     = 6.764 mm^3

CONCLUSION

Here when we offset the sectional area to 0.5mm we came to know that there is an increase of strength.
