Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Objective

Use the Section from your Hood design and calculate the Section Modulus using the formula

S = I/y

Where,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION

Section modulus is the ratio of total moment resisted by the section to the stress in extreme end.It help to find how load can it resist or withstand.More section modulus means more moment resistance to the stress.

Minimum moment of inertia = 1.714319143*10^4 mm^4

Maximum moment of inertia = 5.220137193*10^6 mm^4

Out of which we are taking minimum value for finding section modulus.

Distance between extreme end of the object = 903.3868 mm

Distance from neutral axis and extreme end of the object = 903.3868/2 = 451.6934 mm

Section modulus = I/y = 1.714319143*10^4 mm^4/451.6934 mm = 37.953159 mm^3

New surface offsetted from inmner pannel; 0.5 mm away fromcouter pannel

Minimum moment of inertia = 1.761261488*10^4 mm^4

Maximum moment of inertia = 5.3005998804*10^6 mm^4

New section modulus = 1.761261488*10^6 mm^4/451.6934 mm = 38.992411 mm^3

From the calculation new surface has more section modulus than previous one.Thus new surface has more moment reistance to stress acting on extreme end of object.So new surface is preferable.

So we conclude that if the inner pannel moves away from outer pannel; the section modulus increases.thus strenght of the hood increases.
