Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Section Modulus :-
Section Modulus is a geometrical property used to calculate the bending stresses in a structural member.
It is defined as the ratio of the moment of inertia of a section about its centroidal axis and to the distance of the extreme layer from the Neutral axis.
Type of Section Modulus :
1) Elastic Section Modulus.
2) Plastic Section Modulus.
In Mathematically ,
It is denoted by "Z"
Formula :
Z = `I/ymax`
Section Modulus Represents Strength;
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
ymax = Distance Between neutral axis and the extreme end of object
Calculating Section Modulus :
for Calculating section modulus take datum plane using outer panel edge.It is decided on which the vehicle hit is tested then Intersection curve and project view command helps to get data for Moment of inertia.

After projecting the intersection lines in new sketch for checking strength of hood We can Offset inner panel and see bending strength.
First trial For offset value of "0.9"

I = 2.837375367e + 05 [mm4]
y = 876.4334
s = 64.73 (mm2)
Second trial Offset value of "2.0"

I = 3.008490006e + 05 [mm4]
ymax = 876.4334
s = 68.45 (mm2)
Hood Extreme distance layer :

For this hood value of "ymax" is ::876.4334:: ( For both Trail )
From the above observation the intial value (64.73 mm2) and the final value (68.45 mm2) their are slight increase in the cross section area which leads to increase in the strength.
