Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section Modulus:

It is the ratio of the area moment of inertia from the neutral axis and to the distance of the outermost fiber from the neutral axis.

  • Section Modulus of the Hood Designed was obtained.
  • This is taken as case - 1 study

  • Here the acquired data,
  • I = 2.701mm^4
  • Y = 877/2 = 438.5mm

Section Modulus, S = I/Z Unit (mm^3)

  • S = 2.701/ 438.5
  • S = 0.0061mm^3 (case-1)

By changing the design, and section modulus was calculated.

  • Only the inner panel is offset 0.5mm outside and section modulus is calculated.
  • This result was concluded after calculations.
  • This is taken as case - 2 study.

  • Here the acquired data,
  • I = 2.734mm^4
  • Y = 877/2 = 438.5mm

Section Modulus, S = I/Z Unit (mm^3)

  • S = 2.734/ 438.5
  • S = 0.0062mm^3 (case-2)

Case:1 - 0.0061mm^3

Case:2 - 0.0062mm^3

  • The values may be with less difference, but it concludes that section modulus is directly proportional to the area moment of inertia and inversely proportional to the distance from the neutral axis to the outermost fiber.
