Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Aim:
To find the section modulus of the hood and optimization to improve the overall section modulus.
Objective:
Use the section from your Hood design and calculate the section modulus using the formula S= I/y.
WHAT IS SECTION MODULUS
The Section modulus is a cross-section geometry property of structural elements such as beam, coloumns, slabs, etc and it is used to calculate stress in cross-sections. In general, it can be said that the greater the SM smaller the bending stress.
Calculation of The Section Modulus
The section modulus is calculated as:
S.M. = I/Y
I = Moment of Inertia
Y = Distance/2, 873.46/2=436.73

Procedure :
Case 1 :
So here we are going to calculate the section modulus for the Hood Assembly upto two iterations and can analyze one with more section modulus.
Here we take the section of Hood assembly
Now we take the intersection curve of the Outer and Inner hood using datum plane.

Now, we have close the intersection curve in new sketch plane using Trim and Spline

So now to find out the section interia we use a command called Section Inertia Analysis in the command search section.

S.M : I/Y
I (min) = 2.87 * 10^5 mm^4
Y : 436.73 mm
S.M. = 2.79 * 10^5 mm^4 / 436.73 mm
S.M. = 279108.73/436.73
S.M. = 639.087 mm^3
Case 2 :
In 2nd Iteration the inner hood panel is offset to 1mm outside so that the section area will be increased as Sectional Inertia is directly proportional to the sectional modulus the value of sectional modulus will increase.

S.M : I/Y
I (min) = 2.87 * 10^5 mm^4
Y : 436.73 mm
S.M. = 2.87 * 10^5 mm^4 / 436.73 mm
S.M. = 287376/436.73
S.M. = 658.01 mm^3
Conclusion :
By comparing case 1 & case 2,
1. The Section Modulus value of case 2 is higher than the case 1.
2. As we increase the section area, the moment of inertia & section modulus increase which means strength and load material also increases. Which the moment of Inertia directly proportional to the strength of the material.
