Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section modulus calculation using Hood design

Section modulus:

S = I/y

Where,

S = Section Modulus -Unit- mm^3

I = Moment of Inertia - Unit-mm^4

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object -Unit-mm

Inertia:

Is a property of shape that is used to predict deflection, bending and stress in beams.

The Area Moment of Inertia for a rectangular section can be calculated as

Ix = b h3 / 12

where

b = width

h = height

Calculating Section modulus before optimization:

The hood which was already created is imported and the section inertia analysis is done.

We have to make sure that the curve obtained is a single/closed curve.

MOI(min)= 1.8270205e+5 mm^4

As per the section modulus equation,

S = I/Y

I = MOI (min) Value is considered

Y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object, so Total distance / 2,

Total distance = 487.4151/2 mm

Y = 243.70755mm

Therefore, S = 182702 mm^4 /243.70755 mm

S = 751.86 mm^3

After optimization of thickness (increase area)

For optimization we are increasing offset of outer panel and inner panel it will increase the cross sectional area

MOI= 2.032982e+5 mm^4

Total distance = 487.4151/2 mm

Y = 243.70755mm

S = I/Y

Therefore, S = 203298.2mm^4 /243.70755 mm

S = 834.189 mm^3

Conclusion:

Normal Section module: S = 751.86 mm^3

After Optimization Section module is S = 834.189 mm^3

percentage of optimixation value is = 10.95%

From the study by increasing the depth of inner panel the moment of inertia increases, thereby increasing the section modulus and increase in strength
